St. Michaelis Church in Heemsen is a Neo-Gothic brick pseudo-basilica dating from 1864. Its tower has a medieval core, and its baptismal font dates from the 14th century. As an Evangelical Lutheran church, St. Michaelis is the second-largest church in the Nienburg church district after St. Martin's Church in Nienburg.
The Wölper Burg historic site is located near the town centre of Heemsen. The wider regional area around the town centre also contains the Bierder Burg historic site, the Wolfstein monument, Harry's Klingendes Museum and Serengeti-Park Zoo.
Heemsen was first mentioned in written records in 1096. The municipality contains the remains of two hilltop castles. These include the remains of Brunsburg, approximately one kilometre southeast of Heemsen on the road to Steimbke. Parts of its fortifications are still preserved, and excavations suggest that the main fortification was built in the ninth century.
