Ottenstein is situated on the Ottenstein Plateau, 220 metres above the Weser Valley. From here, views extend across the Weser Valley and, in autumn, over valley landscapes filled with mist. The plateau lies in the heart of the Solling-Vogler Region within the Weser Uplands. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Ottenstein can then continue searching for accommodation.

History

Ottenstein Castle was first documented around 1182. The surviving stone building of the castle is now used as a restaurant with a historic ambience. In 2001, Ottenstein also received a gold medal at national level in the competition “Our Village Should Become More Beautiful – Our Village Has a Future”.

Nature

A local hiking map shows long and short routes across the valleys and heights of the Ottenstein Plateau. The named route “Across the Ottenstein Plateau” (Ot 1) is a 7.1-kilometre circular hike with 76 metres of ascent and descent. The “Feldläufer” (Ot 6) is an 8.9-kilometre quality hiking trail high above the Weser Valley. Farm tracks and slopes around Ottenstein are used for mountain biking tours. The Glessebach stream underwent extensive renaturation in 2000 and 2001.

The interactive tour planner of the Solling-Vogler Region provides information on hiking trails, events, weather and routes.

Culture

The Hattensen Chapel has been used as a cemetery chapel since around 1840 and can be visited annually on Open Monument Day in September. The Antonio Congo memorial in Ottenstein-Hattensen commemorates Antonio Congo, who is described as an African journeyman and carpenter and died in 1843. The car park for visitors to the memorial is located directly in front of the cemetery. The Hehlener Straße Ottenstein stop is designated as a public transport access point to the Antonio Congo memorial.
