Castle, townscape and history

With its imposing main building and adjoining farmyard, Ober-Mörlen Castle is the town’s landmark. The castle also serves as the municipality’s town hall, combining a prominent building with a present-day role in community life. Another important place in Ober-Mörlen’s history is the Catholic Parish Church of St. Remigius. It is regarded as the oldest evidence of the Christian faith in the Mörler area; the parish was first mentioned in 1213. The lower part of the church tower and the main portal are the oldest parts of the church. They are the only building elements to have survived the two major fires. The Gustav Adolf Church is a different kind of church building: the small chapel was built in 1926 to a design by Heinrich Walbe. Walbe was an architect and historic preservationist; his design gave the chapel the style of a Baroque chapel. The Marienkapelle, known locally as the “Kapellchen,” also marks a particular point in the town’s history. Since 1844, it has marked the eastern edge of the village. Its distinctive natural-stone structure has an octagonal floor plan and a pointed roof. Roads to Cleeberg, Butzbach, Nieder-Weisel and Rockenberg once branched off at this spot.

Amphibians, views and hiking trails

The 4.4-kilometer amphibian nature trail focuses on frogs, newts and salamanders. Seven stations provide information about these animals, and you can observe them in their natural habitat at ponds. The trail is particularly suitable for families with children, can be walked in street shoes and does not require a high level of fitness. Its easy-to-follow theme makes the trail a hands-on nature experience for anyone interested in amphibians.

If you are looking for a longer hike, consider the Natura Trail “Natural and Cultural Treasures in the Taunus—From Eichkopf to Haubergsgrund.” The circular hiking trail is 16.8 kilometers long and rated moderate. It starts at the Winterstein parking lot near Ober-Mörlen. Take the length and difficulty into account when choosing your hike; the Natura Trail and the amphibian nature trail offer different ways to enjoy an outing in nature.

The area around Winterstein is a popular destination for hikers, athletes and others seeking recreation. A particular highlight there is the 16.7-meter-high Winterstein Tower. In good weather, views from the tower extend in every direction as far as Frankfurt’s skyline.
