Local History, from the Museum to Half-Timbered Houses

The Münzenberg Geological Garden houses one of the most important geological collections in Hesse; visits are possible by appointment. Münzenberg Local History Museum is located in the old town hall in the district of Gambach. There you can see the approximately 4,500-year-old skeleton of a so-called Bell Beaker man. The geological collection and the prehistoric find offer different points of interest for anyone interested in natural history and the past.

The town’s architectural history can also be read in its landmarks. The Protestant parish church dates back to a Romanesque building from the period when the town of Münzenberg was founded. The former synagogue is in the heart of Münzenberg’s historic town center, close to the parish church. Some of Münzenberg’s finest half-timbered buildings are houses on the market square, Burgweg, Pfarrgasse, Junkernhof, Eichergasse, Bellersheimer Weg and Steinweg. Most took their present form in the 17th and 18th centuries; individual structural elements may be older. The restored Trais Mill impresses with its half-timbered ensemble. The Münzenberg gallows is one of the few remaining brick-built execution sites of its kind in Upper Hesse.

Salt Meadows and Steinberg

The Münzenberg salt meadows include wet and damp freshwater meadows, reed beds and dry grassland. At Steinberg, birch and goat willow trees, neighboring orchards and habitats for many plant and animal species shape the landscape. The area offers excellent opportunities for recreation and delights visitors. Together, these two landscapes offer contrasting impressions: diverse meadows and reed beds in one area, trees, orchards and habitats in the other.

Cycling Routes, a Circular Tour and Guided Town Walks

The R6 cycle route passes through the municipal area of Münzenberg. Another route description takes you from Ober-Hörgern in the southwest via Gambach, around the lime sand works and the Höllberge hills, and back to Ober-Hörgern. The town of Münzenberg also offers public guided walks. They start at 11 a.m. on the third Sunday of each month at the market square in Münzenberg.
