Market Traditions and the Historic Town Center

The Kalter Markt has been celebrated every year in late October since the 13th century and is considered Upper Hesse’s largest folk festival. It includes a centuries-old horse and foal market, as well as a large market with more than 400 stalls. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, consider visiting in October. The market offers a distinctive glimpse into the town’s history: its long tradition dates back to the Middle Ages, while the horse and foal market and the general market form different parts of the festival.

Even outside market time, Ortenberg’s town center tells the story of the town’s past. Ortenberg was first referred to as a town in the 13th century. The town wall, which encloses the historic center and its many half-timbered buildings, dates from this period. Guided tours of the attractive old town also include a walk along the Ortenberg Lantern Trail. This is a way to explore the historic buildings and enjoy a tour with a distinctive theme.

The three-aisled Marienkirche is home to one of the oldest choir stalls in Hesse. You can also see a copy of the important Ortenberg Altar, which dates from the 15th century. Visitors can try out instruments at the music table, while cassette tapes and CDs provide an additional listening experience. Nature Along the Nidder and Trails Through the Landscape

The NABU Ortenberg House by the salt meadows and its outdoor grounds are located in the Nidder floodplain, which is characterized by species-rich meadows. A restored section of the river just behind the house provides habitat for kingfishers, dragonfly species and brown trout; beavers also visit the river regularly. You can experience nature around the house and its natural-style outdoor grounds with a net in the restored Nidder, a magnifying glass in the species-rich wildflower meadow and a visit to the garden where you can pick and taste fruit. Nature watching here brings together the river, meadow and garden as distinct habitats and places to explore.

The Selters Salt Meadows and Vineyard nature reserve is close to the house by the salt meadows. Salt-loving plants such as sea arrowgrass and strawberry clover grow there. If you are interested in unusual plants, you can make this natural area a focus of your trip, alongside the experiences at the house. The Ortenberg recreation area has signposted hiking trails through the surrounding low mountain landscape. The Bonifatius Route, of particular interest to hikers, also passes through the municipality of Ortenberg.

Cyclists also have a specific route to follow: the Vulkanradweg runs directly through Ortenberg’s town center and the villages of Lißberg, Eckartsborn and Selters.
