Wölfersheim – Lake, Trails and History
Accommodation in Wölfersheim
Wölfersheim combines a lake, trails for active days away, and striking reminders of the town’s history. At 37 hectares, Lake Wölfersheim is the largest lake in the Wetterauer Seenplatte lake district. It owes its origins to lignite mining: lignite was mined here in the first half of the 20th century. So if you’re looking for a holiday apartment in Wölfersheim, you can shape your stay around both nature experiences and insights into the history of mining and energy.

The Lake and a Changing Landscape
An historic circular trail around Lake Wölfersheim introduces visitors to the municipality’s mining history at eight stops with information boards. The boards also cover the lake’s formation and the history of the power plant site. QR codes provide additional content, including an audio guide and video footage. This makes it possible to experience the landscape not only as it is today, but also in connection with its former use.
One practical point to bear in mind when planning the circular trail is accessibility: it is largely accessible, but currently has no accessible toilet. If you need an accessible toilet, take this into account when planning your day. There are also suggested running routes around the lake: a circular route of about 3.5 kilometres, as well as options of 5, 10 and 20 kilometres. The different distances give you a clear guide when choosing your running route.
Local History and Energy
The White Tower is a landmark in the Wölfersheim district. The 27-metre-high round tower has a stone spire and a defensive walkway. It was the largest structure in the town’s fortifications, which were completed with its construction in 1408, and is the district’s landmark. Another striking building is the Evangelical Reformed Church of Wölfersheim, one of the largest Baroque hall churches in Germany.
Wölfersheim also has a dedicated place to explore the history of energy: the Wölfersheim Energy Museum bridges the gap between the historic production of energy from lignite and renewable energy. If you’re interested in how energy supply has changed, the museum offers a different way to explore local history than the lake, where the site’s former use can be traced through the landscape.
Trails and Shared Experiences
The Singberg Adventure Trail is a family-friendly circular route of about 3.5 kilometres, with interactive stations. It passes through orchards, a small forest and a gorge. Challenges and obstacles make the route varied, while information about animals and plants adds to the stations. It offers another way to include nature and exercise in your stay.
For longer trips, the Luther Trail 1521 runs between Worms and Wartburg Castle, passing from Hungen through Wölfersheim to Friedberg. The Limes Cycle Route follows the Limes past Wölfersheim. These routes suit different travel interests: you can choose a local circular trail or treat Wölfersheim as a stop on a longer-distance walking or cycling route. At the lake, the Red Lama Fußballgolf Resort offers football golf, fun and team building for individuals and groups by prior arrangement.
