Nidda: City History and Park Trails

Nidda offers different sides of the destination: historic sites in the town and the park and trail landscape in the district of Bad Salzhausen. The market square, old town, Johanniter Tower and Lange Steg give the town’s history tangible places; in Bad Salzhausen, the spa park, graduation tower and terrain therapy trails take centre stage. City history at the market square, tower and bridge

The market square is a starting point for a stroll around town. Its surroundings include a historic fountain, little lanes and renovated half-timbered buildings. In the old town, narrow streets lead past historic half-timbered houses and a castle. The two perspectives have different emphases: the fountain and half-timbering shape the view around the market square, while the old town lanes also bring in the castle and narrow paths.

The Johanniter Tower is the last surviving remnant of the oldest Johanniter establishment in Hesse and the eighth oldest in Germany. It was built from 1491 as part of a large Johanniter monastery complex. The tower thus connects a specific construction period with a special place in the history of the Order of Saint John.

Another historic structure is the Lange Steg: built in 1607, the stone bridge crosses the Nidda River into the historic centre of the town of the same name. The local history museum complements these sites with an overview of the history of Nidda and its region. Frequently changing special exhibitions provide additional highlights; the collection and exhibitions therefore offer different ways to explore local and regional history.

Bad Salzhausen: Spa Park and Terrain Therapy Trails

The 52-hectare spa park is characterised by a rare variety of plants and trees. The graduation tower has numerous benches where visitors can relax and breathe in the air. Its operation is seasonal, with a seasonal break in winter. If you are planning to visit the graduation tower, check its operating hours in advance.

Bad Salzhausen offers three classified terrain therapy trails: the Spa Park Loop, the Landgrave Loop and Am Naturlehrpfad (Nature Trail). The Spa Park Loop is 2.8 kilometres long and follows paved roads and compacted gravel paths. It has a somewhat steeper incline in the Upper Spa Park. Am Naturlehrpfad is 2.7 kilometres long and passes an educational nature trail with information boards and a wetland habitat.

The two routes described differ in length by just 100 metres. Their stated features are therefore also worth considering when planning: the Spa Park Loop is defined by its surface and incline, while the Am Naturlehrpfad route features information boards and a wetland habitat. The Landgrave Loop completes the offer of three classified trails.

A regional look at the Wetterau

Further nature-related highlights come into view across the wider Wetterau region. The nature reserves in the Wetterau district are accessible to visitors via information boards, observation points, and hiking and cycling trails. The Bingenheimer Ried is one of the core areas of the “Auenverbund Wetterau” landscape conservation area.

A network of regional and long-distance cycling routes runs through the Wetterau, and many of the routes are connected. Numerous railway stations and stops make it possible to travel by public transport to the cycling routes in the Wetterau district. Connections and stopping patterns can change, so it is a good idea to check the current timetables when planning your cycling trip.

The region’s history also has its own highlights. The Wetterau Museum presents the history of the town and region from the Stone Age to the Early Middle Ages, as well as the history of the Celts and Romans. It is also a regional information centre for the Limes in the central Wetterau. The Wetterau also offers discovery tours, including night-watchman walks through old lanes and themed guided tours of sights; individual tour dates vary.
