In Meißner, nature and mining history meet legends about Mother Hulda. A circular trail with information boards leads through the surrounding natural environment; at Gustav Mine, hand-hewn tunnels reveal the arduous working methods of medieval miners. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can consider whether you want to explore mainly the attractions in Meißner or include other places in the Werra-Meißner district as well.

Gustav Mine and an informative circular trail

From 8 April 2026, guided tours for visitors at Gustav Mine will take place on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on Hessian public holidays. Check the tour schedule before your visit, as exact dates may change. The hand-hewn tunnels still clearly show visitors how arduous the working methods of medieval miners were. The tour therefore combines a visit to the mine with a vivid impression of historical work underground.

The Kalbe Trail and Eulenstieg form a circular route of about 2.5 kilometres, with 14 information boards. They provide information about the surrounding natural environment, the threats it faces and ways to protect it. The nature trail starts and ends at the Frau-Holle-Teich car park, directly beside the Schwalbental–Bad Sooden-Allendorf/Kammerbach road (L3242). The route length and information boards give the outing a clear focus on nature and learning; conditions on site may vary.

Mother Hulda in legends and the landscape

Many legends about Mother Hulda originate in Meißner. The Meißner Wildlife Park also includes the small Waldwichtelhaus Museum. The local attractions thus bring together nature experiences and cultural themes, without every outing needing to have the same focus: the Kalbe Trail provides information about the environment, while the Mother Hulda legends offer a gateway to regional storytelling traditions.

The wider Werra-Meißner district is also part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park as a tourist region. The landscape between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufungen Forest is characterised by geological diversity, varied landforms, and rich flora and fauna. Hoher Meißner is the highest mountain in the region and is considered the home of Mother Hulda.

Hikes and discoveries in the Werra-Meißner district

If you want to compare hikes of different lengths, the district offers further options: the P1 Hoher Meißner Premium Trail is 13.7 kilometres long and rated difficult. Meißner also has a Nordic walking park with four routes ranging from 6 to 12 kilometres, starting at the Meißner Wildlife Park. Together with the approximately 2.5-kilometre Kalbe Trail, these offer a range of route lengths and activities. If you have a particular Nordic walking route in mind, check its availability locally.

For a different kind of outing, the family-friendly Cherry Experience Trail in and around Witzenhausen leads to 17 stops. Visitors can learn about cherries and their many varieties, try things out and experience the cultural landscape around Witzenhausen. Its combination of hands-on activities, nature and culture offers a different focus from the Kalbe Trail’s information boards. The Werra-Meißner district also offers special themed tours for groups at the Tropical Greenhouse for Tropical Crops in Witzenhausen, rallies for school classes and options for children’s birthday parties.

Meißner as a base when looking for a holiday apartment

If Gustav Mine, the Kalbe Trail and the wildlife park are the focus of your trip, you can centre your search for a holiday apartment on Meißner. If attractions in Witzenhausen are also important, compare it as a possible base in its own right.
