Two Towers, Two Stories

Berliner Turm is a destination along premium trail P19 near Datterode. Those interested in the trail will find a clear link between the hiking route and the observation tower: the Gänsekerleweg leads up to Berliner Turm. This makes it possible to consider the route as part of exploring Ringgau without equating the trail with access to the tower.

The observation tower Point India stands on Sohlberg. It is permanently accessible and is a remnant of the US military base OP-India, built in 1984. Inside the restored tower is an exhibition documenting its history. Unlike Berliner Turm, Point India’s description includes both the accessible tower complex and its historical context.

Church and Altar in Lüderbach

Lüderbach is home to an open church dating from the 15th or 16th century. Inside is the unique Late Gothic Lamentation altar. For a visit focused on culture, the church and altar offer a manageable, tangible counterpoint to the observation towers and hiking trails. The dating leaves both centuries as possibilities; it does not specify a single year of construction.

In the Wider Travel Destination of the Werra-Meißner District

From a tourism perspective, the Werra-Meißner district is part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park. The region between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufungen Forest is distinguished by its geological diversity, varied landscapes, and rich flora and fauna. More than 35 percent of the district’s area is designated as nature protection areas. A large part of the Geo-Nature Park belongs to hotspot 17, one of only 30 areas nationwide with outstanding biodiversity. Highlights include cherry blossom in the Witzenhausen Cherry Country, orchid blooms, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, Frau Holle’s flower meadows, autumn foliage, and winter sports on Hoher Meißner. Hiking and Outdoor Activities

The Werra-Meißner district has a dense network of certified premium trails, as well as the Werra-Burgen-Steig Hessen. These trails take hikers to some of the most scenic areas in the Geo-Nature Park. Premium trail P1 Hoher Meißner is rated difficult and is 13.7 kilometres long; seasonal restrictions may change, so check before planning a hike. Four Nordic walking routes, ranging from 6 to 12 kilometres, start at Bergwildpark Meißner in Meißner. The distance and difficulty ratings can help you take different route profiles into account when planning your trip.

For a longer cycling trip, the approximately 300-kilometre Werra Valley Cycle Route offers another way to explore the region. In 2025, the German Cyclists’ Association (ADFC) awarded it three stars as a quality route. The Geo-Nature Park’s events calendar offers guided hikes, nature experiences, family activities, and themed tours around Hoher Meißner throughout the year. Cherry Country, Town History and Nature Experiences

Several activities in and around Witzenhausen bring together cherry culture and regional history. The Cherry Experience Trail in and around the town is a family-friendly trail with 17 stops. Visitors can learn about cherries and their many varieties, try things out, and experience the cultural landscape. Cherry Hiking Trail 3 offers insights into the last 100 years of cherry cultivation and, during blossom season, leads through old orchard meadows and new plantations. A guided tour of Witzenhausen introduces visitors to the half-timbered town known for its cherries, its three churches, and other historic buildings.

The Cherry Cinema at the cherry car park on Cherry Hiking Trail 3 at Burgberg shows a free film, just under 20 minutes long, about cherry cultivation in Witzenhausen Cherry Country, along with other excursion tips in the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park. The visit is seasonal, so check the schedule in advance. Groups can book special themed tours at the Tropical Greenhouse for tropical crops in Witzenhausen. There are also scavenger hunts for school classes and options for children’s birthday parties. Check specific activities before booking. The Eschwege climbing forest on Großer Leuchtberg adds to this selection with six well-secured courses in the treetops.

The regional offering also includes WerratalTherme in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, with a wave pool, a sauna area incorporating a graduation tower, and 32-degree saline water. The spa also has a Dead Sea salt grotto, a programme of classes, and massages on request.
