Discover the Town’s History and Architecture
The Glass and Ceramics Museum offers a vivid impression of the town’s history. Guided tours are available by arrangement, so if you plan to take one, be sure to arrange a time in advance. The Protestant town church also offers a point of connection to the area’s cultural history: it is designed in the historicist style. If you would like to see the church’s interior, it is advisable to check access beforehand.

Near Großalmerode, Hortensienpark Erbsmühle is located on the grounds of a former nursery. Several thousand plants from 555 mostly historic varieties grow in the park-like grounds. The Bilsteinturm is also in the surrounding area. It was built from basalt columns on the second-highest elevation in the Kaufunger Wald. Getting there is part of planning this excursion; the tower therefore offers a different kind of outing from a visit to the hydrangea park.

The Werra-Meißner District is also part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park as a tourist destination. Hoher Meißner is the region’s highest mountain and is considered the home of Frau Holle. Between the Werra Valley, Hoher Meißner and Kaufunger Wald, you will find varied landscapes, geological diversity, and a rich variety of flora and fauna. This regional setting broadens the view beyond the local destinations in Großalmerode.
The seasons shape different landscapes across the Geo-Nature Park: these include cherry blossoms in the Kirschenland Witzenhausen and orchid blooms, pink poppy fields in Germerode and Grandenborn, as well as Frau Holle’s flower meadows. Later in the year, autumn foliage and winter sports on Hoher Meißner are among the seasonal highlights.
