Bad Sooden-Allendorf between salt history and half-timbered houses
Accommodation in Bad Sooden-Allendorf
Bad Sooden-Allendorf tells its salt story in the spa park and at a graduation tower that still serves as an open-air inhalatorium. Half-timbered houses by the park and along the Werra add a different touch; nearby trails lead to viewpoints, meadows and woodland. This offers a range of ways to shape your holiday: you can focus on local history, a canoe trip, or traces of nature and culture in the surrounding area. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is worth first considering which of these aspects interests you most.
Salt history around the spa park
The Salt Museum in Söder Tor borders the spa park. Its exhibits cover the salt spring, salt production in earlier times and the transport of “white gold” along historic salt routes, as well as salt boiling, the salt trade and the healing properties of brine. A valuable 17th-century copy of Johannes Rhenanus’s “Salt Bible” is among the museum’s special exhibits. If seeing this item is one of your reasons for visiting, check in advance whether it is currently on display.
The Solgraben stream flows through the spa park; in the past, it powered waterwheels that pumped brine up to the graduation tower. The first bathing house near the spa park dates back to 1881. A pumping tower near the park is also among the surviving pieces of salt-processing equipment. Well-preserved half-timbered houses on Weinreihe and Lange Reihe frame the spa park. The watercourse, technical relics, bathing history and half-timbered houses each tell a different part of the town’s story.
The graduation tower and its history
The graduation tower is 140 metres long and 12 metres high. In 1887, it was given a covered walkway and has served as an open-air inhalatorium ever since. During the main season, loungers are available there free of charge for visitors seeking relaxation; check current availability in advance. Visitors who would like to learn about the town’s history on a guided tour can join free town tours held weekly. As the schedule may affect your visit, it is advisable to confirm the current tour time beforehand.
Getting your bearings and discovering more
The Bad Sooden-Allendorf Tourist Information office is next to the spa park. It offers tickets for events, cycling and hiking maps, and information about places to visit. St. Crucis Church is also listed as a sight, together with a biblical garden and the Café Himmelspforte. If you plan to visit this stop, check current visiting arrangements beforehand.
When canoeing on the Werra, you can enjoy views of the half-timbered houses along the banks of Bad Sooden-Allendorf. The P7 “Söder Wald” trail in the nearby area offers a different perspective: awarded the German Hiking Seal as a premium trail, it runs mainly along natural paths through meadows and woodland. There are wide-ranging views from the Meißnerblick and Rabenstein viewpoints; ponds and springs are also along the route. In spring, orchid meadows add to the scenery. Nature and landscapes are the common thread along these trails, while the canoe trip offers views of the half-timbered houses from the water.
Another theme is explored on the 1-kilometre “Roman Camp” educational trail in the nearby area. It passes Bronze Age burial mounds and Carolingian ramparts. If you are interested in archaeological traces, the trail offers a different focus from the salt history in the spa park or the landscape views along the P7.
The wider region: Werra-Meißner district
For tourism purposes, the Werra-Meißner district is part of the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park. Between the Werra valley, the Hoher Meißner and the Kaufunger Forest, geological diversity and varied landscapes shape the region; its flora and fauna are also diverse. The Hoher Meißner is the highest mountain in the region and is regarded as the home of Frau Holle. This regional perspective complements the town’s history with the landscapes and traditions of the Werra-Meißner district.
