Hiking trails and access to Nollig Castle

Numerous regional and long-distance hiking trails intersect in Lorch. One example with named route sections is the “Rhein-Über” hiking trail: it runs for 6.7 kilometres in Lorch and a further 6 kilometres on the other side of the Rhine in Niederheimbach.

Nollig Castle has a different practical feature: it can only be reached on foot via the Rheinsteig; it is not possible to drive there. So when planning your days in Lorch, you can choose between marked hiking routes and a destination that can only be reached on foot. When planning, consider which tours and visits you would like to combine, rather than assuming that every destination can be reached in the same way.

Wine and bread from Lorch

The Historic Hilchenhaus offers two different ways to discover wines from Lorch. The Tourist Information team holds wine tastings there featuring wines from various Lorch winemakers. The Vinothek of the City of Lorch also offers a wide selection from almost all Lorch wineries for a small, spontaneous wine tasting. Ask the Tourist Information or the Vinothek about current tasting options.

Another local speciality is not available at all times: freshly baked bread from the site’s own small bakehouse is sold on selected dates at the Ransel Rural Museum. Check the current baking schedule. The museum is in the Ransel district, at the end of Kirchstraße. Ransel is also home to the Feuerpfeil family’s Heritage Garden, with its magnificent blooms.

Church, museum and history

St. Martin’s Church has a special surprise hidden in its organ: the “Riesling Register” plays birdsong and opens a small door. Behind it are two bottles of Riesling and two wine glasses. The church is generally open as far as the entrance grille from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; check opening arrangements locally before visiting.

The collection at the Robert Struppmann Museum consists mainly of sacred medieval sculptures from around 1400. Finds from the Lorch area include a Bronze Age neck ring and a child’s bracelet. Visits are by prior arrangement. Lorch was formerly a garrison town.

Lorch within the wider Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis destination

The wider regional setting can also be a factor when planning a holiday. The Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis is represented in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper Middle Rhine Valley through the municipal areas of Rüdesheim am Rhein and Lorch. The cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley is shaped by steep river slopes, steep-slope and terrace viticulture, numerous castles, historic townscapes and the Rhine.

The wider Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis destination also includes 14 Riesling loops: circular routes between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein, each 4 to 8 kilometres long, with themes relating to Riesling, viticulture and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. This is a different scale from the specific sections of the “Rhein-Über” in Lorch and Niederheimbach. If hiking and wine are your priorities, you can distinguish between local route details and the broader themed offering across the district.
