Castle, Museum and Places of Remembrance
The Taunusstein Museum is housed in Wehen Castle. The castle served, among other things, as a widow’s residence and hunting lodge, so the site’s former uses now meet its present-day function as a museum. If you are interested in Taunusstein’s history, you can include the museum in your travel plans. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.
A stele in front of the castle commemorates the Jewish citizens of Taunusstein who suffered injustice and violence under Nazi rule. The Jewish cemetery is also located on Halberg in Taunusstein-Wehen. It is not freely accessible, but opens to the public annually on the second Sunday in September for Open Monument Day. The Limes as a Regional Thread of History
The Limes Adventure Trail runs through the grounds of Zugmantel Fort, providing a specific historical point of interest for an outing. The fort is located in the Rhine-Taunus Nature Park and formed part of the Upper German-Raetian Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site. Across the wider Rheingau-Taunus district, the subject extends far beyond this one site: the Limes crosses the district for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005. Before setting out, check with the trail operator for any announced temporary detours.
Paths Along the Aar
The Aar Loop Taunusstein Double Brook follows the two courses of the Kotzebach between Hahn and Watzhahn. It passes the Hahn swimming pool and climbs to the shelter at Dieling. The watercourses and the climb to the shelter are specific features to consider when planning this hike. It is a good idea to check the operator’s notices for temporary detours before setting out.
The Aar Heights Trail starts at the source of the Aar in the Taunusstein-Orlen municipal forest. The two route ideas differ in their described landmarks: the Double Brook Loop focuses on the two courses of the Kotzebach and the climb to Dieling, while the Aar Heights Trail starts at the source. When choosing a hike, you can therefore consider whether you would rather follow the streams or start at the Aar’s source. The route of the Aar Heights Trail may be maintained or rerouted; check current route notices before your hike.
Beyond Taunusstein
If you plan to continue your trip into the Rheingau-Taunus district, there is another themed selection of hikes there: the 14 Riesling Loops are circular trails 4 to 8 kilometres long between Flörsheim am Main and Lorch am Rhein. They focus on Riesling, winegrowing and the cultural landscape of the Rheingau. This gives them a different focus from Taunusstein’s Aar trails, whose described features are the streams and the source of the Aar.
