The Hennethal Landwehr and its circular trail
The educational trail to the historic Hennethal Landwehr is just under two kilometres long and passes through an area of historical, geographical and natural interest; information boards explain it. The Landwehr itself is an approximately 325-metre-long system of ramparts and ditches, which most likely dates from the late Middle Ages. It was rediscovered in 2003. The site lies at the highest point of the circular trail, on the “Platte”.
The circular trail starts at the car park on the L 3031, at the Hennethal exit, between Kettenbach and Daisbach. It is listed as 1,830 metres long, with a walking time of 45 to 60 minutes and an elevation gain of 85 metres. The route is easy to moderate; sturdy footwear is recommended when it is wet. This gives you practical information for planning a walk that combines historical traces with the landscape.
Forest stations and sculptures
A three-kilometre forest trail has eleven stations and is intended for visitors of all ages. The stations explain connections and distinctive features of the forest. Unlike the historic Landwehr trail, the focus here is on learning about the forest. The sculpture trail adds an artistic touch: you can view eleven sculptures by various artists.

Rail trolley rides and horse riding
In the Aar Valley, you can ride a historic hand-operated rail trolley between Aarbergen-Michelbach in Hesse and Diez in Rhineland-Palatinate. A time slot must be booked in advance; arrange the details with the operator before your arrival. The ride adds another way to experience the Aar Valley alongside the walks and trails.
Horse riding is also available in an indoor arena or outdoors. Tournaments held annually invite you to take part or watch.
