Geisenheim between the Rhine and vineyards

Church, garden design and Geisenheim’s history

The Rheingau Cathedral is Geisenheim’s parish church, Heilig Kreuz. The three-aisled hall church was built around 1500 on the foundations of a Romanesque church. In the town centre, Geisenheim’s lime tree, which is over 700 years old, stands in the marketplace. It is considered a landmark of the town and has traditionally been a meeting place for Geisenheim residents. The annual Lindenfest takes place around it.

Another glimpse into the town’s history can be found at Geisenheim’s first municipal cemetery. It has been open to the public as a park since 2012. The park features artistically designed tombs from the 19th and 20th centuries, a historic avenue of thuja trees and the Lade family mausoleum, dating from 1864. The park at Villa Monrepos is another notable testament to the past: today, it is considered an important monument to 1950s garden design.

Bachelin House contains a wallpaper room with hand-painted wallpaper dating from around 1820. The cultural venue “Die Scheune” houses the municipal library as well as rooms for talks, exhibitions and events. Together with the cathedral and the lime tree, these offer a range of cultural points of interest to consider when planning your activities.

Wine and regional impressions

At the wine tasting stand at Goetheblick, you can sample wines amid the vineyards, with views across the Rheingau. From April to October, weather permitting, the stand is open on Fridays from 2 pm to 10 pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 10 pm. Schloss Johannisberg wines, including Riesling, and light meals are available. Geisenheim’s weekly market is held every Friday at Bischof-Blum-Platz in front of the Rheingau Cathedral.

Johannisberg also has its own focus on wine. Schloss Johannisberg, in Geisenheim’s Johannisberg district, is considered the world’s first Riesling estate. The Benedictine monastery was founded in 1100, and the castle was built in 1716. At the wine shop in Johannisberg, you can taste and buy wines from the Schloss Johannisberg estate. From May to September, the Johannisberg winegrowers’ tasting stand at Morschberg offers a changing selection of wines from Johannisberg.

Routes for bikes and hiking boots

The QuerRhein cycling tour passes through Geisenheim. It is 36.1 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of 230 metres. Another tour leads to the “Most Beautiful Vineyard View in the Rheingau 2012”: it starts at Geisenheim railway station and follows the wine trail to the summit of Rothenberg. This gives you two different options for planning your day: a designated cycling route and a circular route starting at the railway station.

The Mühlenwanderweg follows the watercourse through the Elsterbach Valley for over 5.5 kilometres. It runs from Marienthal Monastery to a point close to where the stream flows into the Rhine. Marienthal is a district of Geisenheim and a place of pilgrimage, three kilometres from the valley town, between vineyards and forests. The village is best known for the Franciscan pilgrimage monastery of the same name; many people make pilgrimages there every year.
