Ahnepark: Nature, art and a miniature steam railway

Extensive green spaces and a varied landscape of trees, shrubs and flowers give Ahnepark its character. Particularly old trees were preserved when the park was laid out. Over the years, numerous sculptures were also created here on site during various international sculpture symposia. Nature and art are equally part of what makes the park distinctive.

Ahnepark has seven entrances and exits, a toilet facility, a café-restaurant and parking areas by the entrances. In summer, visitors can experience the miniature railway operated by the Vellmar Steam Railway Club. Swimming and staying active

The Obervellmar outdoor swimming pool has a 50-metre swimming pool with areas for swimmers and non-swimmers, as well as a children’s adventure paddling pool. The Skate 'n' Bike Park Vellmar offers plenty of ways to get around by bicycle or skateboard. Vellmar therefore offers different forms of activity side by side: swimming and sports at the outdoor pool, and cycling and skateboarding at the Skate 'n' Bike Park. Paths through Vellmar and beyond

The Märchenlandweg runs right through Vellmar to the city of Kassel. Information boards along the route provide details about local legends and the past. For those interested in a longer route, the intermunicipal Eco Pfad Ahne offers another option: it connects Ahnatal and Vellmar and is about nine kilometres long. The church in Frommershausen is the oldest surviving building in Vellmar. Dating from the 13th century, it offers a tangible historical landmark in the city. The church and the museum thus present history in different ways: one is a surviving historic building, the other a portrait of everyday life in earlier generations.
