Brasselsberg combines forested trails, traces of history and far-reaching views across Kassel. Those planning a holiday apartment in Brasselsberg can shape their stay in many different ways: with a longer hike along the KS-Süd urban hiking trail, a shorter circuit on the outskirts, nature watching in the Dönche or a trip to Bismarck Tower. Historical and church-music discoveries are also part of the character of the area.

Hiking trails for different day plans

The KS-Süd urban hiking trail is marked in both directions and is around 23 kilometres long. At many points, it can be divided into sections with access to public transport. This is useful if you do not want to complete a longer route in one go and would like to adapt your plans to different stages of the day.

A particularly distinctive option is the Brasselsberg Circuit, Nature Park Circular Trail 3. The forested circular route leads through the Habichtswald on the outskirts of Kassel. Along the way are the Kaffeemühle forest crossroads and the Steintor Porta Lapidaria amid large basalt rocks. Bismarck Tower offers views across Kassel; the trail can be reached directly from the Brasselsberg hiking car park.

For a shorter circuit, the K3 Terrain Therapy Trail is a good choice. It is around 6.5 kilometres long and runs along the outskirts of Brasselsberg. From Kassel city centre, you can reach the trail by tram line 4 to the Druseltal terminus. Another option is the Birkenkopf Circuit, Nature Park Circular Trail 1, which can also be reached directly from the Brasselsberg hiking car park.

Dönche, Ponds and Views

The Dönche area is in the immediate vicinity of Brasselsberg. Walks there pass grass steppes, pools, ponds and small deciduous mixed forests. With a little attentiveness, you may spot horses, brown hares, sheep and deer. The landscape therefore offers a clear contrast to the forested sections of the Habichtswald.

The Sieben Teiche amphibian conservation area is also located along Nature Park Circular Trail 1. It consists of several small ponds beside the trail and complements the Birkenkopf Circuit with a special natural environment. At Bismarck Tower itself, it is worth looking at the structure: The tower on Brasselsberg is 25.5 metres high and was built in 1903/04. In good visibility, the viewing platform offers far-reaching views across Kassel, the Kassel Basin and as far as the Brocken and the Hoher Meißner.

History and Culture Along the Way

The path to Bismarck Tower passes the former facilities of the Marie mine. Lignite was mined there until the 1960s. This historical trace adds an insight into the former use of the surrounding area to the natural experiences.

The local townscape also contains noteworthy evidence from different periods. The Wiederhold estate was completed in 1902. One entrance door is decorated with the four Evangelists, created by the Hofgeismar artist Wilhelm Hugues. The Emmaus Church and the associated parish hall were built from 1952 onwards. Today, the Emmaus Church is a centre for church music in Kassel, with singing groups, children's and youth choirs, a choir, the a cappella choir Vox humana and various instrumental ensembles.

Brasselsberg as a Base for Your Trip

When looking for accommodation in Brasselsberg, it helps to distinguish in advance between the holiday days you have planned. The approximately 6.5-kilometre-long K3 Terrain Therapy Trail is suitable for a shorter circular route, while the approximately 23-kilometre-long KS-Süd opens up other possibilities for a divided tour with public transport connections. The Brasselsberg Circuit combines forest, basalt rocks and views, while the Birkenkopf Circuit adds the Sieben Teiche to your stay. This allows you to choose your holiday apartment or holiday home according to the experiences that interest you most: exercise, nature watching, history, views or culture.
