Hiking and cycling around Hofgeismar
The Diemeltaler Schmetterlings-Steig passes through Hofgeismar and its districts. The quality hiking trail Weserbergland-Weg also passes Hofgeismar and its districts. This gives you two named hiking trails to consider as possible themes for your stay. If you are interested in cultural routes, the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail offers another option: it also passes through Hofgeismar and its districts and is a European Cultural Route.
For cycling tours, the Märchenland cycling circuit is another option. Starting in Hofgeismar, you can ride through the entire nature park on this specially marked circular route. The Brunnenkirche is also located on the Hessian long-distance cycling route R4. Since 2024, it has displayed the sign designating it as a recognized cycling route church of the EKD. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider a signposted cycling loop through the nature park and a long-distance cycling route as two different options.
Brunnenkirche, Gesundbrunnen and the town’s history
At Gesundbrunnen stands the temple, built by Simon Louis du Ry in 1790/92 on the site of two older buildings. Eight Ionic columns support the structure; inside is the mineral spring’s outlet. The columns and the spring outlet give the temple its distinctive appearance. The former bathing facilities at Gesundbrunnen are also part of the area’s present-day character: they offer a pleasant place for a weekend walk. Gesundbrunnen thus brings together historic bathing facilities and a walk outdoors, without equating their former purpose with the experience they offer today.
Two museums with different areas of focus offer further insights into local history. Hofgeismar Town Museum was founded in 1938 as the Municipal Local History Collections and is the oldest museum in Kassel district. The Pharmacy Museum is housed in the historic Steinerne Haus, one of the region’s oldest surviving buildings, dating from 1239. The building itself is therefore a remarkable part of the region’s architectural history.
After renovation and refurbishment, the Pharmacy Museum operated as a private museum for 30 years. Its exhibits at the time included pharmacy furnishings, pharmaceutical manufacturing, a specialist library for study and a herb garden. This former use illustrates the range of subjects associated with the Pharmacy Museum and clearly distinguishes it from the local history focus of the Municipal Collections.
