Hiking trails with history and a choice of routes

The approximately 13-kilometre-long “Cultural History” Eco Path connects historical sites dating from the Late Bronze Age to the mid-20th century. The full route takes around three hours of walking time. You can also hike the trail in two stages, using the suggested shortcuts. This gives you different options for planning your day without losing sight of the trail’s historical breadth.

A shorter option is the marked running route from the town hall to the “Green Centre” and back: it is five kilometres long. The approximately 4.5-kilometre-long “Following the Trail of Life” Impulse Path is a circular route that passes ten stations and is fully accessible. The path on the Lohfelden side of Lindenberg is also accessible; it can be traversed on foot, by bicycle, with a stroller or using a rollator. Each of these routes offers its own way to experience Lohfelden outdoors.

If you are interested in a longer hike through cultural history, the 14-kilometre-long “Baddschensteig” runs around Lohfelden-Vollmarshausen, following the boundaries of the Vollmarshausen district. It starts at the village lime tree in the town centre. The old Thingstätte, with its distinctive stone table, is a notable historical landmark: court proceedings were held there in the Middle Ages.

Local history, art and chess

Four information boards tell the story of the former “Söhrebahn” railway line. They are located at Waldauer Weg/corner of the swimming pool access road, at the “Old Ochshausen Station,” at Lange Straße/corner of Berliner Straße, and at the “Old Vollmarshausen Station.” These locations bring the former railway line into focus at several named sites in Lohfelden.

On the second floor of the Old Ochshausen School, the Chess Museum displays a collection of exhibits from different periods dating back to the 12th century, as well as from various countries and cultures. Parts of “Chess Picture Worlds” by Lohfelden graphic artist and artist Bernd Besser are also on display there. For those interested in culture, the museum offers a unique opportunity to explore chess and its many representations.

Crumbach Church was built in its present form in 1770. Its tower is much older and is thought to have belonged to an old fortified church dating from the 13th century. The audio walk “Craft, Half-Timbering, Artwork” begins at the old Crumbach Church and its fortified tower in the historic centre of Lohfelden-Crumbach, then leads through the town centre. Lohfelden-Crumbach is also one of the municipalities featured in the district of Kassel’s audio tour programme.

Green Centre, park and leisure activities

The “Lohfelden Green Centre” recreation area lies between Crumbach, Ochshausen and Vollmarshausen. It has places to relax, play and take part in sports, play areas for young children, a sensory trail and a fitness trail. The “Dancing Oak” viewing platform adds to the range of attractions. Families can enjoy play facilities for young children as well as opportunities for exercise and time outdoors.

The approximately 9,600-square-metre Vorsterpark was established as a public park in 1970/1971 and offers opportunities for relaxation, sports and play. The park is also home to a sculpture inspired by the fairy tale “The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was.” Since 2004, Lohfelden has been part of the “Fairy Tale Trail” in the district of Kassel. Another special feature of the green spaces is the “Trees of the Year”: Lohfelden has taken part in the initiative since 2006. Each tree has a large boulder beside it with its name carved and painted on it; visitors can also see the trees along a hiking trail.

Other leisure activities include the Lohfelden outdoor pool, with one- and three-metre diving boards, a wide-wave slide, children’s and baby pools, a large play and sunbathing lawn, mini golf and beach volleyball. There is also a varied 18-hole mini golf course right by the outdoor pool, run by an active mini golf club. Two exhibitions featuring changing themes and works of art are held at the town hall each year; visitors can attend the opening of each exhibition.

If you would like to discover more places, you can also find Fuldabrück, Fuldatal, Calden, Helsa, Grebenstein, Reinhardshagen, Breuna and Schauenburg here.
