Paths along the Fulda and through the countryside

Fuldatal combines paths along the Fulda with views of quiet valley landscapes and cultural attractions in several districts. In Ihringshausen, car-free paths pass the Märchenmühle or the Waldschwimmbad on the way to the Fulda valley floor and the Fulda Cycle Route R1. This makes it easy to plan a stay around different interests: cycling by the river, hiking, swimming or visiting cultural attractions. The Fulda Cycle Route R1 gives you a clear choice of which way to follow the river. While a cycling trip can be planned around the direction of the river and your destination, the views of the valley and the Fulda loop shape the landscape experience on hikes. In the wider Kassel travel destination, nature parks offer a different kind of scenery: the Habichtswald is characterised by large stands of beech forest and volcanic basalt peaks, while the Reinhardswald combines centuries-old pollarded oaks, beech and spruce forests, river valleys and natural stream landscapes.

Time by the water and culture

The Waldschwimmbad in Ihringshausen has four heated pools for non-swimmers, swimmers, diving and young children. This makes it a standalone option alongside cycling and hiking. If you are planning a visit to the swimming pool, check the seasonal opening times in advance, as they may vary.

The Fuldatal Local History Museum in Simmershausen has sections on local customs and traditions, natural history and a small geology collection. The collection therefore offers three thematic areas, with the geological section explicitly described as small. Check the current opening hours before your visit. The Marienbasilika in Wilhelmshausen is a Romanesque church and part of the former Wahlshausen Monastery. Its architecture and monastic history offer a different focus from the collections at the local history museum.

Insights into the currency reform

The “Museum of the 1948 Currency Reform” exhibition features newsreel reports from 1948 and eyewitness accounts at multimedia stations. The exhibition on the currency reform was established at an authentic location in 1993 and has been presented in a newly designed format since April 2024. Haus Posen offers another historical point of reference: the secret meeting to prepare for the currency reform took place in the barracks building of the former military base in Rothwesten. The cultural offerings thus range from collections and Romanesque church architecture to exhibitions and local history.
