Kaufungen combines green trails with local history and unique opportunities to explore the senses. The approximately 45-hectare Steinertsee Park connects Niederkaufungen and Oberkaufungen as a green lifeline. Other routes pass through hilly areas on the outskirts, historic half-timbered districts or former mills. Depending on which of these themes interests you, you can shape your stay in very different ways.

Steinertsee Park as a green meeting place

Steinertsee Park includes a nature area with a bird sanctuary, reed beds and a fishing lake. The park thus brings together several distinctive landscape features in one place. A circular path more than one kilometre long invites you to walk, jog and hike. If you would like to combine outdoor exercise with views of natural areas, this offers a different option from Kaufungen’s themed trails.

Routes through town centres and outskirts

The Kunigundenpfad forms a loop around Kaufungen and runs mostly through the hilly outskirts of Oberkaufungen and Niederkaufungen. The Niederkaufungen Half-Timbered Trail has a different focus: it runs exclusively through Niederkaufungen’s historic half-timbered district. This distinction is useful for finding your way: one trail passes through the outskirts of both parts of town, while the other stays within Niederkaufungen’s historic centre.

The Kunigundenweg also passes through a town centre, in this case Oberkaufungen’s. It passes former mills on its way to the 1,000-year-old collegiate church. The history of milling and a landmark building are among the points of interest along this trail. The Sankt-Barbara-Weg, in turn, is named after the patron saint of miners and passes the Rossgang Mining Museum in Oberkaufungen. Its name and route past the museum give it a distinctive connection to mining history.

Water, churches and sensory perception

The Eco Pfad Mensch und Wasser in Kaufungen follows the traces of different forms of water use. It passes former mills and sawmills and offers insights into cultural history, scenic views and walks in nature. Here, water is not just a landscape feature but also a way into the history of how it was used in the past. This distinguishes the trail from routes focused on half-timbered houses, the outskirts or mining.

Volunteer church guides accompany visitors through the collegiate church, the former royal court and the Ritterschaftliches Stift in Kaufungen. For current visiting arrangements, it is worth checking the church’s information. This lets you plan a guided visit to these places as a cultural highlight of its own.

In Kaufungen-Oberkaufungen, the SinnesGänge are housed in 16 accessible vaulted chambers of a former brick kiln. There, 40 interactive stations invite people of all ages to discover and experience their senses. The distinctive combination of a historic building and sensory experiences offers a different way to explore the area than the park and town-centre trails. The operator publishes current visiting hours separately; check them before your visit.

Choose the right holiday apartment for your interests

When choosing a holiday apartment in Kaufungen, consider which experiences you would like to shape your stay: Steinertsee Park and its natural areas, trails through the historic town centres, or the themes of water, mining and churches. Each route has its own focus, and you do not have to combine them into a single tour. The SinnesGänge’s 40 interactive stations invite people of all ages to discover and experience their senses; the other trails and places bring different themes into your plans.
