Neuenstein combines the history of its castle on a steep limestone crag with outdoor activity on the circular “Raboldshäuser Ritterweg” hiking trail. At Eisenberg, weather-dependent opportunities for cross-country and downhill skiing are also available. This mix gives you several points to consider when choosing Neuenstein as a holiday destination. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether local history, a longer hike or a weather-dependent day of activities should shape your stay.

Neuenstein Castle and its History

Neuenstein Castle stands on a steep limestone crag about 350 metres above sea level, above the district of Saasen in the municipality of Neuenstein. It was built around the middle of the 13th century by Count Albert I of Wallenstein and was originally called Neuwallenstein; its first documented mention dates to 1267.

Hiking and Winter Sports at Eisenberg

The “Raboldshäuser Ritterweg” fairy-tale trail is a 15.2-kilometre circular hiking trail. It starts at the Neuenstein Castle hiking car park in Neuenstein. Its length gives you a concrete reference point for planning a day of hiking; as a circular route, it is an extended outing rather than a short walk. The named starting point and exact route length make the hike a clearly defined focus for your stay.

The municipality of Neuenstein describes Eisenberg as its local mountain. Cross-country and downhill skiing are possible at the Eisenberg ski and trail park when weather conditions are suitable. At the same time, the ski club reports that both slopes and the drag lift are currently out of operation. If you are planning these activities, check their current operating status before your visit.

The NVV bus route 370 is also useful for getting around the region: at weekends, it runs every two hours from Bad Hersfeld via Neuenstein to the summit of Eisenberg. In summer, it carries bicycles. As routes and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the operator’s latest information before travelling.

Culture and Nature in the Wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg Destination

If you are planning a stay that extends beyond Neuenstein, the wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. The Bad Hersfeld Festival has been held annually in the Abbey Ruins since 1951, a site considered the largest Romanesque church ruin in the world. The Lullus Festival in Bad Hersfeld also has a long tradition: it has been celebrated every year without interruption since 852, during the week of 16 October, in honour of the town’s founder, Lullus. The castle festival in Nentershausen takes place every year on the first weekend of October, with more than 600 performers. Check the specific event dates for the year in question.

Rotenburg an der Fulda offers a different impression: its historic centre contains more than 350 half-timbered houses, which form a distinctive row along the banks of the Fulda together with Rotenburg Castle. Nature is also part of Hersfeld-Rotenburg. The Rhäden nature reserve is part of the Green Belt Germany biotope network. The Great Sinkhole near Rockensüß covers 60,000 square metres and is home to rare orchids and ferns. These places and attractions are regional additions, not features of Neuenstein.
