Friedewald combines cultural attractions with nature experiences nearby: the moated castle and local history museum offer different historical perspectives, while the Dreienberg, with its woodland, nature reserve and trails, provides a focus of its own. Moated Castle and Historic Trails

Friedewald Moated Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1302. Visitors can explore it independently with a guided audio tour: at each stop, scan the QR codes with your phone.

On the Kuppenrhön Tour, the fortified ruins of Friedewald Moated Castle are among the historic sights along the route. The Kuppenrhön Cycle Route and Luther Trail 1521 also pass by the castle. The 30-kilometre Kuppenrhön Tour makes a suitable day trip through the hilly landscape of the northern Rhön. A visit to the castle is therefore different from seeing it as one stop on a longer regional tour.

Dreienberg: Woodland, Nature Reserve and Trails

The Dreienberg lies close to the destination. Its plateau and slopes are covered with calcareous beech forests, including wood melick beech forest, pea-flowered beech forest and orchid beech forest. The area around the Dreienberg was designated a nature reserve in 1986. Together with Landecker Berg, the Dreienberg forms the watershed between the Werra and Fulda rivers.

The nature reserve can be explored from three hiking car parks via a panoramic trail that passes the foundations of Dreienburg Castle. On the Dreienberg Extratour, visitors can spot calcicole plants from the trail, including numerous orchid species and silver thistles. Information boards along the Extratour cover flora and fauna, historical background and geological features. The panoramic trail and the Extratour thus offer different ways to explore the nearby Dreienberg.

Local History Museum: Crafts and Rural Heritage

Friedewald Local History Museum focuses on the region’s craft and rural heritage. Most of the objects on display date from 1850 to 1940. The contrast in age with the moated castle is clear: it was first mentioned in a document in 1302, while most of the museum objects are from a much later period. In the wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination, the Bad Hersfeld Festival has been held annually in the collegiate church ruins since 1951. The Lullus Festival in Bad Hersfeld has been celebrated every year without interruption since 852, during the week of 16 October, in honour of the town’s founder, Lullus.

Groups can visit the local history museum outside regular opening hours by booking in advance. On request, the local heritage association offers a full-day programme with a knowledgeable local guide, lunch, coffee and dinner.
