Protected nature and hiking trails

The nature-related highlights also offer different points of interest. The Rhäden nature reserve is part of the Green Belt Germany biotope network; part of the protected area lies in the municipality of Wildeck in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district. The Große Doline sinkhole near Rockensüß covers 60,000 square meters and is home to rare orchids and ferns. While Rhäden can be understood through its place in a larger biotope network, the sinkhole stands out for its clearly specified area and plant life.
