Cornberg brings together medieval architectural history and a circular hiking trail through mixed deciduous and coniferous forest. The monastery, built from banded sandstone, and the former quarry right next to it offer a cultural focus; on the “Drei Kreuze” trail, wooded sections alternate with the open summit of Kuhberg. This brings landscape, architecture and a historically significant trail together as distinct themes for a holiday.
Cornberg Monastery and Sandstone
The community of women from which Cornberg Monastery developed placed itself under the authority of Hersfeld Imperial Abbey in 1230. Between 1292 and 1296, it moved to the more sheltered valley of Cornberg. The simple monastery buildings, made from characteristically banded Cornberg sandstone, are arranged around a square courtyard. In the north wing stands the single-nave church, dedicated to Mary and built shortly before 1300, with its bell tower and surviving nuns’ gallery.
The Cornberg Sandstone Museum is in the west wing. Its geological and palaeontological section provides information about the history and formation of Cornberg sandstone. In Cornberg, the stone is encountered both as the building material of the monastery buildings and as the subject of the museum: the banded buildings and the geological and palaeontological perspective offer two different ways of exploring the same material.
The former Cornberg sandstone quarry is directly adjacent to the monastery. It can be explored independently Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Check the opening times before setting out if you plan to include the quarry in your day.
Hiking the “Drei Kreuze” Trail
The route map dated August 18, 2025 recommends the Cornberg Tennis Club courts as a starting point; there is parking and an information point there. For the “Drei Kreuze” circular hiking trail, it gives a distance of 8.25 kilometres, an elevation gain of 178 metres and an elevation range of 275 to 419 metres above sea level. The route runs southwest of Rockensüß in the Sontra valley and west of the Cornberg settlement through extensive mixed deciduous and coniferous forests.
Along the circular trail, the open summit of Kuhberg offers panoramic views as far as Meißner, Ringgau, Kuppenrhön and Monte Kali. The contrast between the extensive mixed forests and the open viewpoint brings together two distinct landscape impressions; the named destinations give a clear sense of how far the view from the summit reaches.
At the “Drei Kreuze” shelter, three plain wooden crosses stand beside the old regional trade route “Franzosenstraße” (X9, Wartburg Trail), known since the Middle Ages. The crosses are associated with the passage of the French army under Napoleon; three soldiers are said to have died there.
A Natural Attraction in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg Destination
The wider Hersfeld-Rotenburg destination is also home to the Große Doline bei Rockensüß nature reserve. It covers 60,000 square metres and is home to rare orchids and ferns.
