Farms, houses and castles tell a story

The Rhön Open-Air Museum Village preserves regional Rhön traditions and architecture. Its historic farmsteads provide an insight into the way of life of the Rhön’s ancestors 200 to 250 years ago. The buildings thus offer a glimpse of a world very different from today’s vacation days.

The old town also features striking historic landmarks. The Elf-Apostel-Haus is the oldest house on Marktstraße in Tann and was built around 1500. Tann’s castles—the Red Castle, the Blue Castle and the Yellow Castle—were built between 1513 and 1693 and represent different branches of the noble family. The story thus stretches from a house dating to around 1500 to a group of castles whose buildings were constructed over a longer period. The castle complex is among Tann’s historic buildings; the town attributes its significance to the influence of the noble family “derer von und zu der Tann.”

Two museums, two perspectives

While the Rhön Open-Air Museum Village presents the architecture and way of life of earlier generations in the Rhön, the Nature Museum focuses on the landscape. Its 26 dioramas showcase the characteristic landscape of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and its distinctive flora and fauna. The two museums therefore have different focuses: historic farmsteads and everyday life on the one hand, landscape and nature on the other.

Hiking and cycling around Tann

The approximately 180-kilometer premium long-distance hiking trail “Der Hochrhöner”® passes through Tann’s old town on its western route, going by the museums, castle and marketplace. For cyclists, the Ulstertal Cycle Path runs through Tann. It is mostly flat or downhill along the river and follows the former Ulstertal Railway line for most of its route. The local routes therefore differ in more than just how you travel: the Hochrhöner takes in the old town and sights as it passes through Tann, while the cycle path follows the river and former railway line.

Guided tours, fly fishing and stargazing

The Schlenderweinprobe combines a guided tour from the museum village via the Nature Museum and town gate to various historic sights with a tasting of different wines. If you plan to take part, it is advisable to check the current booking arrangements in advance. The “Museumsgeister im Rhöner Museumsdorf” tour lasts about 1.5 hours and can be booked for groups of 10 or more; check the booking details before making plans here, too.

Fishing—in particular, fly fishing—is generally permitted on the section of the Ulster in Tann. A valid fishing license is required; check the rules before taking part. For stargazing, there is a nearby “star cinema” on Hundsbacher Weg, with a rotating wave lounger and an information board. Alongside guided cultural activities, there are also nature-focused options and activities with different requirements.
