Calvary Hill: Stations of the Cross and Remembrance

A Stations of the Cross route with individual stations leads to the summit of Calvary Hill. At the end of the route is a stone chapel, built in memory of the plague of 1736. Calvary Hill is also home to a lovingly designed Marian grotto. From the crucifixion group, you can look out over Poppenhausen. Calvary Hill thus combines religious themes with a direct view of the town, while the chapel and Stations of the Cross also give your visit a historical point of reference.

The Art Mile and Hochrhöner: two different route scales

The Poppenhausen Art Mile is a 2 km hiking route featuring sculptures by artists from Germany and abroad. It also offers distant views across the “Land of Open Horizons.” Here, art and route are directly connected: the sculptures are part of the trail, while the distant views open up a wider perspective.

The Hochrhöner is one of eight premium long-distance hiking trails in Hesse. It runs for 173 km between Bad Kissingen and Bad Salzungen and passes over the Wasserkuppe in the Poppenhausen area. The difference in scale is clear: the Art Mile is a short hiking route, while the Hochrhöner is a 173 km route between two towns. When considering hiking options for your stay, you can choose between an art trail and a much longer route.

Nearby: Guckaisee and Steinwand

Well-known destinations near Poppenhausen include the Wasserkuppe, Guckaisee, Steinwand, Ebersburg Castle ruins, the Sieblos Museum and Calvary Hill. At Guckaisee bathing lake, a long, wide bathing jetty and a floating raft island invite you to sunbathe. There is also a circular trail, a children’s playground and a water playground. You can explore Steinwand’s rocky landscape on a circular trail. Steinwand has several hundred climbing routes graded 2 to 9 on the UIAA scale. Guckaisee and Steinwand therefore offer different nearby experiences: water and play areas at the former, and rocky scenery, a circular trail and climbing routes at the latter.

The Wasserkuppe is the highest mountain in Hesse and one of the notable places in Fulda district. In the Poppenhausen area, the Hochrhöner passes over the Wasserkuppe.

This includes junior and senior ranger programmes, certification for biosphere schools and day-care centres, and hundreds of events each year, including nature and adventure tours and markets.

Regional food is also part of this wider context. The “Quality of the Biosphere Reserve! The Rhön” quality seal is awarded to regionally produced food from value chains that are in line with the objectives of the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve.
