Discover Rasdorf: Anger, fortified churchyard and Point Alpha
Accommodation in Rasdorf
Rasdorf combines an unusually large village centre with medieval architectural heritage and memories of the Cold War. The Anger, fortified churchyard and Point Alpha each offer a different perspective; there is also the “Der Rasdorfer” extra tour, a longer circular hike. You can get to know the village through its striking buildings, historical themes or an active walking tour.

Anger and fortified churchyard
Rasdorf’s Anger is 170 metres long and 75 metres wide, making it the largest village square in Hesse. These dimensions give you a sense of the scale of the village centre. The Anger is also one of two possible starting points for the “Der Rasdorfer” extra tour: the circular route begins either here in the village centre or at the Point Alpha Memorial.
The medieval fortified churchyard offers another perspective on the village’s earlier history. The site has a high wall and four defensive towers with loopholes. An information pillar tells you about the former church building; a QR code provides an audio file with further information about the church and the fortified churchyard. This lets you explore the architectural features and their history together.
Point Alpha and the history of the border
Point Alpha adds the history of the inner-German border and the Cold War to the historical picture. Until 1989, Point Alpha was the U.S. Army’s most important observation post on the former inner-German border. At the US Camp Point Alpha, the “Cold War” exhibition covers the history, military life and strategic importance of Point Alpha. The “Everyday Life” exhibition focuses on how people in the Hessian border region lived alongside American soldiers. The exhibitions therefore highlight different perspectives: military and strategic themes on the one hand, and life together in the border region on the other.
“Der Rasdorfer” as a longer tour
If you want to explore Rasdorf actively, the “Der Rasdorfer” extra tour is a circular route through varied landscapes and past sights from different eras. The trail is marked with a large red “R”. It is 15.5 kilometres long, takes around five hours, is of moderate difficulty and includes 368 metres of elevation gain. The estimated time gives you an indication of the length of the hiking day; route details may change if the trail is modified. Be sure to check the tour information again when planning.
When choosing a holiday apartment, your preferred pace for the day can be a helpful guide: would you like to focus on historical sites and exhibitions, or on the longer circular tour? The two starting points at the Anger and the Point Alpha Memorial provide practical guidance, while leaving you free to choose where to begin.
Landscape and culture in the wider Fulda destination
In the wider area around Rasdorf, nine closely grouped basalt hills form the Hessian Kegelspiel. They are the weathered remains of former volcanoes or volcanic vents. The Rhön in Fulda district also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling as part of the wider Fulda destination. Wasserkuppe is the highest mountain in Hesse and one of the distinctive places in Fulda district. The landscape therefore extends beyond Rasdorf’s local features into the wider Fulda region.
Culture is also part of this wider destination: the Main-Kinzig-Fulda Cultural Summer has been held for more than 27 years. More than 100 events in music, theatre, art exhibitions, literature and other fields receive support as part of the festival. The venues are spread across Main-Kinzig district and Fulda district. If you are planning a trip with a cultural focus, it is worth checking the dates of the individual events.
The work of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve enriches the educational landscape in Fulda district. This includes junior and senior ranger programmes, certification for biosphere schools and daycare centres, and hundreds of events each year, including nature and experience tours and markets. Individual events and dates may change, so check the current programme in advance. This makes it possible to distinguish Rasdorf’s history and circular trail from the nature and culture of the wider Fulda destination, and to tailor your plans to your own travel interests.
