Castles, Towers and Local History

During renovation work inside Eichenzell’s little castle, it was established that the Ebersberg family already had a residence or tower castle there around 1250 to 1260. Eichenzell’s Wartturm has a different historical connection: it was built in the 12th century, along with seven other towers, as a signal tower for nearby Fulda. Today it stands on an elevated site and offers wide-ranging views of the surrounding area. The little castle and the Wartturm thus offer different ways to explore Eichenzell’s history—from early residential and defensive buildings to a structure built for signaling.

Schloss Fasanerie is dedicated to courtly residential culture. Its museum houses grand reception halls and opulently furnished living quarters. The porcelain collection includes courtly tableware from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as figurative porcelain from the royal manufactories of Meissen, Berlin, Copenhagen and Sèvres. Those who enjoy viewing rooms and objects from different perspectives will find several specific aspects of courtly culture here: the furnishings of the living quarters, the impact of the reception halls and the artistic design of the porcelain.

The Eichenzell Local History Museum adds another perspective, focusing on the culture and way of life of the population in and around Eichenzell. Its 180 m² of exhibition space offers insights into prehistory and early history, as well as the origins and development of the town. For families who like to explore different historical topics on an outing, the local history museum, little castle and castle museum each offer a distinct focus, rather than simply telling the same story from one perspective.

Park, Municipal Forest and Trails

The landscape, too, offers a variety of experiences. The park at Schloss Fasanerie covers about 100 hectares. Its features include meadows, flower beds, artistically designed lakes and paths, as well as fields, loosely arranged groups of trees and a forest crossed by avenues. Eichenzell’s municipal forest covers around 315 hectares; the Rippberg is part of it and is a natural recreation area with basalt boulders, various animal species and valuable stands of trees. Visitors can therefore choose between a landscaped park and a forest area with its own natural character.

The Albert Schweitzer Trail is about 950 meters long and follows a well-maintained, easy-to-walk path. It passes through the designated core zone of the “Eichenzell Primeval Forest.” Philosophical quotations about humanity’s relationship with creation give the trail its own theme. Guided tours explain the quotations and relate Albert Schweitzer’s statements to issues of our time. When exploring Eichenzell with children, you can take different interests into account when choosing between a short nature-focused walk and a museum or castle visit.

On the Rippberg, the tree species trail leads over the summit and through the forest; the approximately two-kilometer forest tour introduces visitors to notable trees. The trail is not signposted. It can only be walked as part of a guided tour led by former district forester Norbert Hahnel. This is important when planning an outing: unlike a signposted trail, it cannot be treated as an independent route without the guided tour.
