Cycling through the town centre
The Hessian R3 long-distance cycle route, also known as the Rhine-Main-Kinzig Cycle Route, runs from Rüdesheim am Rhein to Tann in the Hessian Rhön and passes right through the centre of Neuhof. This makes cycling an obvious focus when planning your trip: the long-distance route passes through the town, while other activities have their own destinations.
At the edge of town, in the direction of Dorfborn, the Neuhof pump track is located right beside the R3 cycle route. It has a separate kids’ track and is designed to be accessible, so wheelchair users can also use the facility. This means the same cycle route offers both a long-distance cycling experience and a purpose-built pump track, highlighting different aspects of cycling.
Planets and potash mining on themed trails
Opened in 1999, the Planetary Trail connects Neuhof and Kalbach. It is about ten kilometres long and presents interesting facts about the sun, moons, planets and comets on eleven information boards. The starting point is above the large bus car park at Johannes Kepler School, by the information board about the sun. The approximate route length and its subject make this a distinctive way to combine exercise with astronomy.
A different theme is explored by the anniversary trail “Der Kaliweg” (The Potash Trail), created in 2023. The 17.4 km circular trail starts in the centre of Neuhof and makes a wide loop around the municipality; it is intended for both residents and tourists. Five information boards cover potash mining in Neuhof and the Fulda/Werra potash district. They provide information, among other things, about the history of the Neuhof works, working above and below ground, geology and the uses of potash products. The Potash Trail therefore focuses squarely on the region’s mining history.
Panoramic trails and historic traces
The Opperzer Berg Panorama Trail passes the beekeeping education centre, the Marien Grotto and St. Michael’s Church. Visitors interested in these stops will find a different combination of themes here than on the Planetary or Potash Trail. The Fliedetal+Kemmete Panorama Trail follows the Fliede towards Neuhof. Its route includes a landscaped path over the motorway tunnel, with benches and viewpoints, followed by a return through Neuhof to Dallesplatz.
Historic routes and buildings also give Neuhof its distinctive character. A visible old section of the Via Regia between Neuhof-Ellers and Fulda is now once again part of the Way of St. James towards Frankfurt. Neuhof Water Castle was originally built as a castle. Around 1250, Prince-Abbot Heinrich IV of Erthal (1249–1261) had it fortified with new walls, fences and ditches. In Neuhof, you can therefore encounter both a section of the Via Regia once again incorporated into the Way of St. James and the history of a fortified building.
