Münster (Hessen) combines nature experiences with places of remembrance and culture. The Wisentwald and the MUNATUR exhibition focus on the environment and nature conservation; in Altheim, the ARThaus is part of the cultural scene. The Museum an der Gersprenz and paths for exploring Münster and its two districts round out the offering. This lets you discover the character of the place outdoors as well as at historical and cultural sites.

Experience nature in the Wisentwald

The Wisentwald nature trail is located on the site of the former Muna munitions depot in Münster-Breitefeld. At around 1.5 kilometres long, with five interactive stations, it offers opportunities to get active, explore and reflect. Its focus is on the environment and nature conservation; as a recreational and educational resource, the trail is for visitors of all ages.

The Wisentwald and the MUNATUR exhibition can be explored independently during opening hours. Before your visit, check the municipality’s current Muna page for opening hours. The nature trail may only be traversed on foot or by bicycle. The Muna site also has a viewing platform where European bison and Przewalski’s horses can be observed; the animals may not always be present.

For further exploration, circular walking trails offer a chance to get to know Münster and its two districts. The Wassererlebnisband Gersprenz themed cycling route offers a different perspective: it passes through Münster, and information boards with QR codes share insights about nature, the region and its people. The routes therefore differ both in how you travel and in whether your exploration focuses on Münster and its districts or takes you through the municipality along a themed cycling route.

Remembrance and culture in Münster and Altheim

Since 7 April 2025, a total of 21 Stolpersteine by artist and sculptor Gunter Demnig have commemorated Jewish residents at eight locations in Münster and Altheim. They were driven out, persecuted and murdered during the Nazi era. The memorial stones make their memory visible at various locations across the town.

The ARThaus, the Old Town Hall in Münster-Altheim, hosts theatre performances, exhibitions, concerts, readings and other cultural events. As the programme and access depend on the event, it is worth checking the venue’s current listings before your visit.

The Museum an der Gersprenz is located in the historic Langsmühle mill on the Gersprenz. A museum was established there in 2005/2006 and is operated on behalf of the municipality of Münster by the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein e.V. A historic setting and the work of the association thus complement the cultural programme at the ARThaus, without the two venues needing to offer the same programme.

Münster Bürgerpark offers another kind of outing, with a playground and a mini-golf course. If you would like to include the mini-golf course in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently open.

Darmstadt-Dieburg as a wider setting

The wider travel destination of Darmstadt-Dieburg includes a variety of natural landscapes: the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Lower Main Plain, the Messel Hills, the Reinheim Hills, the Vorderer Odenwald and the Sandstone Odenwald. The Grube Messel UNESCO World Heritage Site is also part of this wider area. Its fossil deposit preserves a diverse range of uniquely preserved fossils documenting the history of the Earth 47 million years ago. These regional themes complement the picture of Münster but should be distinguished from the town’s local attractions.
