Weiterstadt brings together an outstanding Rococo ensemble, a lakeside recreation area and discoveries in the green. Braunshardt Palace, Steinrodsee and Braunshardter Tännchen represent different sides of the town: cultural history, outdoor activities and a walk with interactive stations.

Steinrodsee and a changing landscape

Steinrodsee in Gräfenhausen covers around 12 hectares and is 4 metres deep. As a recreation area, it is suitable for walking, jogging and Nordic walking. These three activities give a concrete impression of the kinds of outdoor exercise that are part of the local landscape.

South of Steinrodsee, a secondary habitat developed in a former water-retention basin, a polder, after renaturation work began in 1994. It has developed very well and continues to do so today. The landscape thus also tells a story of changing land use: the basin's former role as a retention area was followed by renaturation.

Braunshardt Palace and ecclesiastical heritage

In art-historical terms, Braunshardt Palace is one of Germany's most significant Rococo ensembles. This is a clear cultural-history highlight of Weiterstadt: anyone interested in the period will find a particularly striking subject to explore during their stay.

The Protestant Church in Gräfenhausen is also a cultural monument whose furnishings are to be preserved because of their historical and artistic significance. The palace and the church highlight different aspects: the art-historical classification of a Rococo ensemble, and the historical and artistic significance of an ecclesiastical monument.

A walk with six stations

On a walk through the wooded Braunshardter Tännchen, visitors can turn, guess, feel and marvel at six stations. The stations add different ways to get involved to the walk—a different focus from the outdoor activities at Steinrodsee. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current condition of the path and stations.

The wider setting: Darmstadt-Dieburg

Darmstadt-Dieburg district offers a broader landscape setting. It encompasses the Hessian Rhine Plain, the Lower Main Plain, the Messel Hills, the Reinheim Hills, and the Vorderer Odenwald and Sandstone Odenwald. The UNESCO World Heritage Site Grube Messel is also part of the region's cultural and natural history: its uniquely preserved and diverse fossils document the history of the Earth's development 47 million years ago.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Weiterstadt, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay: cultural history, activities by the lake or a walk with interactive stations. This lets you make your choice based on the experiences that matter to you on your trip.
