Floodplain landscape and nature experiences

The Lower Oder Valley National Park protects a distinctive floodplain landscape with a rich variety of animal and plant life. Its characteristic habitats include wetlands, meadows and floodplain forests, as well as hillside forests alongside the river floodplain and dry grasslands. This diversity gives a stay in nature a range of different dimensions: water-shaped habitats and open meadows are part of the landscape, alongside wooded areas and drier ground. The national park offers opportunities to experience nature, enjoy nature-based recreation in an environmentally friendly way and learn about the natural world. Guided canoe tours through the floodplains depart from Schwedt/Oder.

Schwedt/Oder also offers a variety of options for active days: the Oder–Neiße Cycle Route passes by the city, and river cruise ships dock at the newly redesigned riverside promenade. These options offer different ways to shape your trip—a bike ride, a canoe tour or watching a river cruise ship arrive. Industrial history and the city museum

The tourist city walk “Schwedt in Motion” leads to 20 industrial sites. At each location, an on-site QR code lets you start or end the walk. This means you can begin or finish at any of the 20 points. The virtual version is available to use permanently, without limits and free of charge. The walk offers a distinct focus alongside the nature of the national park: it turns attention to industrial sites and the city’s development.

On the ground floor, the Schwedt/Oder City Museum presents parts of its extensive collection on the history of the city and region. Its main focus is the city’s “Golden Age,” when a junior branch of the House of Hohenzollern resided at Schwedt Palace. Special exhibitions explore cultural history through art and theatre, religion and migration, crafts and the military, as well as industry and architecture. Lectures, activity days, museum education projects and storytelling cafés complement the exhibitions. For your trip planning, this means you can explore the city’s history not only through its courtly past, but also through different aspects of everyday life and culture.

Historic sites and cultural programme

Notable buildings include the Protestant parish church of St. Catherine, a cross-shaped fieldstone building dating from the second half of the 13th century. The Berlischky Pavilion is a former French Reformed church, commissioned by Berlischky and built in 1776–1777. Monplaisir Park in the northwest of Schwedt/Oder was laid out around 1700 in the French style. It includes the former pleasure pavilion, the gardener’s house and the huntsman’s house, as well as the pheasantry.

You can encounter further historical themes at the Jewish ritual bath on Gartenstraße: the ensemble consists of a mikveh and a former temple attendant’s house. In the SEMINARhaus of the Jewish Museum Schwedt/Oder, the historic synagogue floor has been visible and accessible to the public since 2021. The museum presents changing exhibitions and hosts lectures. Criewen Palace was the manor house of a former estate complex with a farmyard, Lenné Park, and the gardener’s house and tool shed belonging to the former estate gardens. The listed Kunow estate complex consists of a steward’s house, an estate park, a granary and a stable.

For a different kind of cultural evening, the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt offer dramatic and musical productions, concerts, music theatre and cabaret. AquariUM Schwedt has swimming pools, a leisure area with a giant water slide, a sauna complex and wellness services. This lets the character of your trip take centre stage without limiting you to just one side of the city.
