Schwedt was mentioned as a town in 1265; later, the town became the seat of a lordship that passed from Pomerania to Brandenburg in 1479.
From 1689 to 1788, Schwedt was the seat of the Brandenburg Hohenzollern line. Schwedt Palace, built between 1719 and 1723, survived the extensive destruction of the town during the Second World War.
