Old Town and History
The historic centre includes the old town, the market square and the adjoining lanes. Storkow’s St Mary’s Church dates from the 14th century; its tower is 36 metres high. The route is therefore a circular trail that passes through several named landscape areas. The succession of meadows and places makes the trail a way to experience Storkow and its surroundings on foot.
Another hiking option is the seven-kilometre circular hike “Rundwanderung zur Binnendüne Waltersberge” (“Circular Hike to the Waltersberge Inland Dune”). It leads from Storkow (Mark) to one of Germany’s largest inland dunes. The seven- and 8.5-kilometre distances give you a concrete basis for comparison when choosing different hiking destinations for your trip. The themes differ, too: the inland dune on one route, and the Salzweg with its meadow sections on the other.
Views and Nature
The observation tower at Marstallwiesen offers a view over the lowland landscape of the salt springs and Lake Schaplowsee. In Selchow, the Sielmann observation tower offers views across the extensive lakes of the Sielmann “Groß Schauener Seen” nature landscape. Its nearly continuous belt of silting vegetation includes reed beds, swamp forests, bogs and wet grasslands. This description of the landscape draws the eye beyond the open water to the different habitats along the shore.
At Naturgut Köllnitz in Groß Schauen, a district of Storkow (Mark), there is a Heinz Sielmann Foundation exhibition about water, air and the world in between. It adds a thematic focus to the impressions of the lakes and wetlands. Together with the viewpoints, it offers a choice of nature experiences, letting you decide between views from a tower and an exhibition about nature.
