Discover Neuzelle: Monastery, Gardens and Everyday Culture
Accommodation in Neuzelle
Discover Neuzelle through its fully preserved Cistercian monastery. But there is more to see than the monastery’s architecture: garden art, rural everyday culture, church art, a bike tour and farm animals offer different ways to experience the place. Neuzelle brings together cultural and historical themes with other experiences.

Monastery and Baroque Garden Art
Neuzelle is home to a fully preserved Cistercian monastery. The Baroque monastery garden is a five-hectare park, restored according to the original plans in the 1758 abbey atlas. The garden thus combines a tangible historical connection with the design of a park. If you are interested in culture, you can broaden your focus from the monastery’s architecture to garden art.
On the monastery grounds, the Church of the Holy Cross features a 128-square-metre Baroque dome fresco. St. Mary’s is the pilgrimage church of the Diocese of Görlitz. The fresco is a highlight of church art, while St. Mary’s role as a pilgrimage church offers another religious perspective. If you want to distinguish between architecture and religious themes, each provides its own starting point for discovering Neuzelle.
Everyday Culture at the Straw House
The Neuzelle Straw House is a museum of rural everyday culture housed in two half-timbered buildings constructed in 1780, with their original room layouts. The half-timbering and original floor plan draw attention to the buildings themselves; the focus of the exhibits is rural everyday culture. The Straw House thus complements the monastery and church perspective with a different way of exploring the town’s history.
Every year around Easter, the Straw House hosts an Easter egg exhibition featuring eggs from around the world collected by the Keller family of Neuzelle; monthly readings are also held. The exhibition offers a seasonal reason to visit, while the readings provide another regular event. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these offerings, check the current dates in advance.
Bike Tour and Animal Encounters
The Monk’s Tour starts in Neuzelle and follows paved and surfaced cycle paths as well as natural trails. The route therefore includes different types of paths. If you want to take varying surfaces into account when choosing a route, this is a useful point of reference.
At the Richter family winery, you can watch and pet many farm animals. The experience is designed for both children and adults, offering a different focus from visits to the monastery and museums. For families who want to include animals in their holiday plans, it’s a specific option alongside the cultural and historical attractions.
Find a Holiday Apartment to Match Your Holiday Priorities
When searching for a holiday apartment in Neuzelle, you can start by deciding what kind of holiday you want: are you mainly interested in monastic culture and rural history, or would you also like to include cycling and animal encounters? This can help you decide whether Neuzelle’s mix of attractions suits your plans.
