Rauen combines a village character shaped by history with excursion destinations in the nearby Rauener Berge. The village’s history includes the fortified church and farmsteads around the village green; recurring events add their own distinctive touches. The surrounding area also offers erratic boulders, an observation tower, hiking trails and winter activities that depend on the weather. This distinction can help you choose a holiday apartment: should your trip focus mainly on village history and local traditions, or on activities in the mountains?

Fortified Church, Village Green and Local Traditions

The fortified church was probably built in the 13th or 14th century. Together with the farmsteads around the village green, it shaped Rauen’s appearance until the 18th century. The date is therefore approximate; what is certain is the long-standing historical role that the church and farmsteads played in the village’s character. Anyone interested in how a village developed will find a tangible point of reference here in the connection between the church and the village green.

Since 1996, the municipality and local associations have held a Christmas market every year at the fortified church. Village history and a recurring local tradition thus come together in a historic setting. If you would like to include the market in your travel plans, check the specific event date in advance.

Another tradition in Rauen is the Fontanelauf. It takes place every year on the third Sunday in April. As the current schedule may differ, check the specific date before a trip planned around the event. This means that, in addition to the Christmas market, Rauen also offers a recurring spring event.

Erratic Boulders, Views and Hiking Trails in the Rauener Berge

The nearby Rauener Berge are home to the Markgrafensteine, the largest erratic boulders in the Mark Brandenburg. An observation tower has also stood there since September 2011. In good weather, the view from the tower reaches as far as Berlin. The view therefore depends on weather conditions, while the erratic boulders are an attraction in their own right. Depending on whether you are more interested in striking natural formations or distant views, you can focus your excursion differently.

There are two hiking routes described, with different lengths. A 17-kilometre route leads through the Rauener Berge and links the Markgrafensteine, the Paulsbornquelle and the Rauener Berge observation tower. The Rauener Berge circular trail is just under 16 kilometres long and also runs through the mountains. The lengths are therefore similar; the longer of the two routes explicitly names three stops. Trail conditions can vary, so it makes sense to factor them into your specific plans.

Alongside the landscape and outdoor activities, the Rauener Berge also offer a glimpse into industrial history: brown coal was mined underground in old tunnels. Information boards beside historic mining carts tell this story. This adds a historical perspective on how the area was used, without conflating the hiking destinations with the history of mining.

Activities with Different Conditions

The Fontanelauf is an annual event in Rauen; distinct from it is the Fontanelauf circuit, which runs around the Rauener Berge. It can be completed by running, hiking or Nordic walking. The same route thus offers different ways to get active, while the event date provides a separate reference point for planning your trip.

When there is enough snow, you can ski and go sledging in the Rauener Berge. These activities explicitly depend on sufficient snowfall and are therefore not a reliable option for every winter trip. Together with the hiking trails, they highlight the difference between weather-dependent winter activities and the routes described above, whose trail conditions can change.

Choose a Holiday Apartment to Suit Your Travel Interests

When choosing a holiday apartment in Rauen, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the village’s history and recurring events, or the nearby Rauener Berge with their hiking trails, erratic boulders and views. If you are planning a longer hike, you can compare the 17-kilometre route, with its three named stops, with the route through the mountains that is just under 16 kilometres long. For winter activities, snow conditions are also part of the planning. This way, you can choose your location based on the experiences that matter to you, without blurring the distinction between the village and its nearby surroundings as a single excursion area.
