Churches and Historic Traces
The churches in several districts offer specific details of local cultural history. Herzberg Church houses historically significant objects protected as monuments, including a silver-gilt chalice from the first half of the 16th century and a brass baptismal bowl from 1668. The dates point to different periods, while both objects form part of the church’s historic collection.
The church in Neubrück was solemnly consecrated on 15 May 1955. The half-timbered extension to the transept was renovated in 2018. The two dates mark different events: the consecration of the church and the later renovation of its half-timbered extension. In Buckow, both the church and the Slavic rampart beside it are protected as monuments. Here, church architecture and an archaeological monument stand side by side.
Birkholz Church also has medieval origins. Its entrance has a door with wrought-iron straps that is about 300 years old. Such details provide a different focus from the dated objects in Herzberg or the building history in Neubrück: in Birkholz, a visible architectural feature draws attention to the church’s age.
Wildlife Watching in Birkholz
In Birkholz, visitors can observe fallow deer, red deer and other animal species in an organically managed fenced wildlife enclosure. With its nature-park character, Gut Hirschaue is a local recreation destination and offers guided tours of the enclosures. Check the arrangements for wildlife watching and guided tours in advance.
