By train to the monastery
The RE3 train takes you directly to Chorin station from Berlin Central Station, Potsdamer Platz and Gesundbrunnen, as well as from the direction of Angermünde. From the station, a signposted footpath leads to Chorin Monastery in about 25 minutes. This gives you clear guidance for your journey and the onward walk to the monastery.
Monastery history, exhibition and music
Chorin Cistercian Monastery was founded in 1273. The permanent exhibition explores the construction of the brick monastery and the medieval monastic economy in the context of regional history, up to the monastery’s dissolution in 1542. It thus focuses on both the building and its economic role and historical context. The exhibition’s specific presentation may change.
Contemporary art is presented in the infirmary, the monks’ former hospital and guesthouse. The works currently on display may change. Since 1992, the monastery has hosted annual chapel concerts as a chamber music series. The programme features sacred and secular music from the Middle Ages to the modern era; individual concert programmes vary. Park tour and Amtssee Lake
Another way to explore the monastery grounds is to take the approximately 90-minute park tour. It follows an outdoor route past the remains of the former monastery mill, along the monastery’s west façade and on beside the Nettelgraben to Amtssee Lake. The tour ends at the cemetery. As booking arrangements may change, check them before making your plans.
Amtssee Lake is a designated bathing area in Chorin, and swimming is permitted. The lake is up to 6.5 metres deep. Before swimming, check whether any seasonal or safety notices are in effect locally. This makes it easy to distinguish time by the water from a visit to the monastery and fit it into your day’s plans.
