The listed Old Forge probably began operating around 1624. It mainly served as a blacksmith’s workshop for shoeing horses and is now a small cultural venue. The Petitjean family mausoleum offers a different historical perspective. It was built in the Neoclassical style in the early 19th century and is located in the churchyard west of the Protestant church, opposite the main portal. The mausoleum commemorates the operator of Werneuchen’s postal and relay station. In its time, this station was one of the largest of its kind in the Brandenburg part of Prussia. The building thus connects family history with the importance of postal and relay services in the region at the time.
The former manor house at Berliner Allee 9 on the B158 adds a building with a different present-day status to this picture. It was completed in 1914. After its exterior was restored around 2012, it remains privately owned and vacant. When exploring the town’s history, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the different buildings: the forge is a small cultural venue, while the manor house is privately owned and vacant.
Swimming spots and a longer route
In Werneuchen’s district of Löhme, the circular trail around Löhmer Haussee offers another way to spend your time. There are three natural swimming spots along the trail, one of which charges an admission fee. There are also two dog swimming spots. If you are travelling with a dog, you can take these designated places into account; if you plan to swim, the fee at one of the natural swimming spots is also relevant. This makes it easier to distinguish between the different options when planning your day.
The Way of St. James from Werneuchen to Bernau is on a quite different scale: the route is about 17 kilometres long and takes approximately five to six hours. Its length and duration make this an extended outing for which you can set aside enough time.
