Walks and the circular route around Grimnitzsee
The 16-kilometre circular route around Grimnitzsee starts and ends at Joachimsthal station. It runs mostly along paved roads and a new cycle path; between Leistenhaus and Neugrimnitz, it follows unpaved forest and field paths. The different surfaces are something specific to bear in mind as you prepare. As surfaces can change due to maintenance or construction work, check local conditions before setting out.
A self-guided walk takes you through Joachimsthal and lets you explore the town at your own pace. Along the way, you pass a small orchard and a bee garden. The historic Landgang connects sights between Werbellinsee and Grimnitzsee. This gives you several different ways to spend your time in the town: the longer lakeside circuit, a walk through the town, or a route linking sights between the two lakes.

Chorin Monastery is a key example of North German Brick Gothic architecture; the Niederfinow Boat Lift is Germany’s oldest working boat lift. The Ice Age Geopark at the Oder Edge is also part of the wider picture of Barnim: it stretches across the Uckermark and Barnim districts in northeastern Brandenburg. The Barnim district’s cycle route network has a total length of 610 kilometres; the “Around the Schorfheide” circular hiking trail is 143 kilometres long and runs through Barnim Nature Park. Barnim’s numerous bathing lakes offer opportunities to relax. Boat tours are available on Werbellinsee, and canoe trips are possible on the Finow Canal. The Finow Canal is Germany’s oldest artificial waterway still navigable today.
