Traces of the Town’s History
Wasserburg a.Inn is home to a castle dating from the 12th century. The small town hall chamber has frescoes from 1564. These two dates point to different historical reference points: the castle and the chamber’s interior decoration. Together with the Gothic houses and arcades, they add several historical accents to the old town’s character.
The Wasserburg Museum covers a broad range of topics: across four floors, it displays around 8,000 exhibits and 52 individual themes, from prehistory and early history to middle-class life in the 19th century. These include the history of the patrician families and shipping on the Inn. Since 1938, the museum has been housed at Herrengasse 15, in a Gothic building in the Inn-Salzach style with an arcaded courtyard. A visit offers a glimpse inside historic houses in Wasserburg’s old town. Architecture and interiors are therefore also part of the museum experience.

The Wasserburg Beer Catacombs reveal another layer of history. Dug deep into the Kellerberg hill, they form a cellar system of vaulted chambers and passageways where beer was once stored. The focus here is not a collection of exhibits, but the former storage function of an underground system.
Getting Around on Foot or by Bike
The circular hike along the Innleiten follows the high riverbank around half of the old town. The Wasserburg loop to Attel starts in the old town, passes the Innstaustufe bird sanctuary, and continues along a walking route of about 6.5 kilometers through the Inn floodplain forests to Attel. The two walking routes differ in their focus: one circles half of the old town, while the other leads through the floodplain forests to Attel.
