Gstadt on Lake Chiemsee combines swimming and water sports at Hofanger with gardens and trails; boat connections make the Chiemsee islands part of your day-trip plans. Your stay can therefore take different forms: time by the shore, a walk, a themed stroll or a trip across the lake. Bathing Shore, Windsurfing and Trails to the Islands
At the Hofanger shore, visitors can swim in Lake Chiemsee, play beach volleyball, sail and surf. In Gstadt, the surf school has offered windsurfing courses for beginners and advanced surfers since 1981. As course offerings and seasonal operations may change, check which courses are available during your travel dates before setting off.
From the surf school, you can paddle by kayak, alone or in a group, to nearby Fraueninsel or to uninhabited Krautinsel, right next to it. Another option is the passenger boats that run year-round from Gstadt to Fraueninsel and Herreninsel. The onward journey to Prien takes 15 minutes. In summer, there is also a direct connection from Gstadt to Herreninsel. Check the boat timetable before your trip; for kayak tours, take water conditions and operations into account.
Gardens and Walks in Hofanger Nature Park
Hofanger Nature Park has a rose garden, a medicinal plant display garden and herb beds. A small stone labyrinth marks the “Path to the Center.” The Mund-ART Weg Gstadt focuses on flora and fauna, has six stops in Hofanger Nature Park and is rated easy. The same nature park thus brings together garden areas, a labyrinth and a nature-themed trail, offering different ideas for a walk.
For further route planning, the signposted nature trail passes through glacial landscapes along the northern and western shores of Lake Chiemsee and by the Eggstätt Lakes. Its outer loop is about 42 kilometres long; from Gstadt, you can join parts of the nature trail route. The Chiemsee Circular Trail passes Keilbacher Bay and Mühlner Winkel on its way to Gstadt. The two options are described differently: the nature trail’s approximate outer-loop length is given, while the circular trail is described by its stops and its destination in Gstadt.
St. Peter’s Church and Culture in the Wider Rosenheim Destination
The branch church of St. Peter in Gstadt is one of the oldest places of worship in the Chiemgau region. Its core is Romanesque; around 1500, a Gothic choir was added, followed by delicate Rococo ornaments around 1778. This sequence reveals several distinct architectural periods.
In the wider Rosenheim destination, attractions in Amerang offer further cultural and historical themes. The Museum in Amerang Castle provides insights into the castle’s architecture and the history of the aristocratic family. The Amerang Farmhouse Museum, run by the District of Upper Bavaria, features farmhouses, craft buildings and technical installations from the Chiemgau region. The Amerang Open-Air Museum offers individual guided tours and activities for groups; arrangements may need to be made in advance. Established in 2010, the moor nature trail between Amerang and Halfing explains how the moorland formed after the Ice Age, as well as the native animal and plant life.
