Churches and art with a story of their own

The Protestant Carolinenkirche in Großkarolinenfeld is the first Protestant church in Old Bavaria. It was consecrated on 13 October 1822 in the Neoclassical style; the building work was overseen by master builder Johann Karmann from Rosenheim. The date of consecration, architectural style and building supervision offer several specific starting points for exploring the church’s cultural history.

The Protestant rectory of the Carolinenkirche also tells of the building’s combined ecclesiastical and educational uses. It was built in 1805 with a prayer hall for worship services and school lessons. After the church was built, the prayer hall was used only as a classroom. Thus, alongside its religious history, the building’s history also includes a specific educational use.

The small Baroque organ in the Protestant Carolinenkirche has another remarkable story to tell. It comes from the Catholic monastery church in Tegernsee and was first played in the Protestant Carolinenkirche on 15 August 1824. Its Catholic origins and first use in a Protestant church add a musical dimension to the town’s history.

The Catholic parish church “Zum kostbaren Hl. Blut Christi” was built in 1851. Its furnishings include an altarpiece by Feilnbach artist Leo von Welden and a late Gothic Madonna. Tattenhausen is also part of the municipality of Großkarolinenfeld. The Church of the Holy Cross there was consecrated in 1196; its 800th anniversary of consecration was celebrated on 9 May 1996. The Leonhard Chapel on Josef-Baumann-Straße marks a much more recent date: Leonhard and Magdalena Schlosser had it built in May 2001. These dates therefore span the period from the consecration in 1196 to the chapel’s construction in 2001, including several milestones from the 19th century.

Cycling tours as a second focus
