The Museum im Klösterle documents Peiting’s history from prehistoric times to the recent past. Its sections on mining, skiing, beekeeping, hunting and fishing cover a range of different topics. At St. Michael’s Parish Church, you can discover other historical details: it houses a baptismal font dating from 1331 and 14 Stations of the Cross rendered as reverse-glass paintings. The Villa Rustica near Peiting was a Roman country estate, discovered in 1956 beside the road to the hamlet of Kreut. The remains of its bathhouse, re-excavated between 2000 and 2004, lie beneath a glass shelter that encloses them on all sides; information panels explain the site. Another trace of the area’s geological and mining history can be seen at Bühlach: a coal seam exposed during road construction has been permanently preserved as a geological record. Paths, Viewpoints and Water
The Ammerlauf educational trail in Schnalz near Peiting covers the history, nature, geology and legends surrounding the Ammer on eight information panels. In the town centre, stone steps lead from Obere Straße to the Mariengrotte. In 1896, the Peiting parish community had it built under Pastor Braun as a faithful replica of the grotto in Lourdes. From there, you can look out over Peiting; you can walk via the Stations of the Cross to the summit cross on Kalvarienberg. The memorial chapel can also be reached on foot from the town centre via the grotto path to the Mariengrotte. It commemorates the victims of expulsion and honours the contribution of new residents to the development of the market town of Peiting.
The route to the geological site is signposted from August-Morals-Straße to the car park. From there, an approximately 1.2-kilometre paved path runs along the B472 to the site; it is described as suitable for wheelchair users. Check the path conditions before your visit. The well-signposted Peiting Forest Discovery Trail starts at the car park at Sonnenbichl, passes via Kalvarienberg and adds another woodland walk to the options.
Cycling Tours and Time for a Swim
Cyclists can choose from routes of varying lengths and layouts. “On the Romantic Road” is about 40 kilometres long, hilly and passes through Peiting, Rottenbuch, Schönbegg, Wildsteig, Wieskirche, Steingaden, Riesen and Kreut before returning to Peiting. The tour features many climbs and descents. The 13-kilometre, hilly “Romans and Welfs on the Lech” circular route connects Peiting and Schongau.
