Rottenbuch lies amid monastic history and a landscape of moraine hills. Those wishing to combine culture and exercise during their stay will find several places to start: the former collegiate church of the Nativity of Mary, the Monastery Trail and the Pfaffenwinkler Milk Trail. Monastic History and Rococo Art
The Church of the Nativity of Mary is now a parish church and was formerly the collegiate church. The Gothic building, with its detached bell tower, was built in the 15th century on the foundations of a three-aisled Romanesque cross basilica. Its interior tells a further, much more recent story of art: from 1737 to 1746, the Wessobrunn artists J. Schmuzer and his son, Matthäus Günther and F. X. Schmädl decorated the church in the Rococo style. Highlights include valuable stuccowork, colourful frescoes, ornate altars and wooden sculptures. Different architectural and artistic styles thus stand side by side in one place.
The former collegiate church, now the parish church of the Nativity of Mary, is considered Rottenbuch’s most valuable cultural monument. The Frauenbrünnerl pilgrimage chapel is quite different in scale: a small, octagonal building dating from 1708, it houses a Madonna from the 14th century. Those interested in sacred architecture can include these two very different buildings in their exploration of Rottenbuch.
Two Trails, Different Excursions
The Rottenbuch Monastery Trail explores the complex of the Augustinian Canons’ monastery. Eighteen numbered panels cover existing and destroyed buildings and how they were used. You can begin the circular walk at any point. The panels give the route a historical focus, so you can choose where to start to suit your day’s plans rather than being tied to a set starting point.
The Pfaffenwinkler Milk Trail centres on ten interactive activity stations. The circular route is 4.2 kilometres long; allow at least two hours. It is also suitable for small children and pushchairs. One station leads to the Schönegger Käsealm, where you can stop for milk and cheese products. This makes the trail especially well suited to a shared outing where the route itself and the stations are part of the experience.
Landscape and Trail Connections
Rottenbuch covers 31.5 km² in the varied moraine hill landscape of the Alpine foothills. Several long-distance routes also pass directly through the town: the King Ludwig Way, the Ammergau Alps Meditation Trail and the Munich Way of St James. These routes differ from the themed Monastery Trail and Milk Trail; depending on whether you are looking for culture, exercise or a longer walk, you will find different inspiration for your stay.
Another landmark is the Echelsbach Bridge. Built in 1929, it spans the 76-metre-deep Ammer Gorge. The bridge is on Federal Highway 23 between Peiting and Oberau. This road is part of an important north–south route via Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, continuing on to Austria, the Brenner Pass and Italy. For orientation, this means that the bridge and gorge are part of a road and landscape connection that extends beyond Rottenbuch.
A Local Custom Throughout the Year
The Rottenbuch Leonhardi Ride offers another glimpse into local traditions. It takes place on a Sunday around 6 November, the feast day of the patron saint of animals, with the date agreed in consultation with neighbouring communities. As the date depends on this agreement, do not plan your visit around a fixed annual date.
