A One-Off Guided Tour
During a one-off event at Hofmark Castle on 8 September 2024, guided tours were offered with the von Croy castle-owning family, district archaeologist and heritage conservationist Alois Spieleder, and district heritage curator Rudolf Drasch. Culture, Landscapes and Trails in the Wider Passau Travel Region
In the wider Passau travel region, Tittling is home to the Bavarian Forest Open-Air Museum. It is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. On 20 hectares, visitors can explore more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest, dating from 1580 to 1890. The museum village includes farmsteads, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments; Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666, is also part of the site. A visit to the museum therefore ranges from rural living and work to schools, crafts and religious buildings.
The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal spas; well-known thermal springs are found in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. The Granite Adventure Hiking Trail runs around Hauzenberg, while the Smugglers’ Trail is in the Danube Pearls area. For cycling trips, the Danube Cycle Path passes through the Passau region and received a four-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Federation. The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. These examples bring together a range of regional interests: hiking and cycling routes alongside river landscapes and thermal springs.
Cultural events are also part of the region’s offerings. Ortenburg Castle Culture is an events series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle. From April to December, it features music events, cabaret performances, spooky nights at Ortenburg Castle, talks and guided visits. Check the dates for your travel period.
