Cycling and Hiking in Langenbach

The route of the Abens Cycle Path provides a useful point of reference for planning a trip: it first follows quiet roads through the municipality and then crosses the Ampertal valley. The local description also lists the Isar Cycle Path and the Ammer-Amper Cycle Path as ways to explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle or on foot. So you can choose your route based on whether you would prefer to focus on cycling or hiking. Here, the route and activity are closely linked to the landscape, although not every tour has to follow the same route.

Pilgrimage History and Bell Tower

The Maria Rast pilgrimage church is a landmark of Langenbach. In 1313, Louis IV, Duke of Bavaria, had it built in gratitude for his victory at the Battle of Gammelsdorf. The date and dedication give the site a clearly identifiable historical dimension. The bell tower in the square in front of the new parish church, next to the town hall, offers a different point of interest. Because of its paving, the square is popularly known as “Red Square”. Maria Rast and the bell tower thus represent two distinct features of the townscape: its enduring pilgrimage history and a striking place name inspired by the square’s design.

The Ampertal Valley in the Greater Freising Destination

Within the greater Freising destination, the Ampertal valley offers a distinctive natural landscape. Located in the district of Freising, the valley is designated as a protected landscape and is home to numerous animal and plant species that are especially worthy of protection. These include four of the 16 dragonfly species threatened with extinction in Bavaria. The Ampertal is also used as a local recreation area for hiking and cycling in the district. There is also a regional connection when planning cycling trips: a cycling map for the district of Freising presented in 2021 included the entire local cycling network, the Isar Cycle Path, the Ammer-Amper Cycle Path, rated four stars, and around 20 different suggested tours. The two cycle paths offer different perspectives for planning: one is among the long-distance routes included on the map, while the other is listed there with a four-star rating.

Freising Culture as Another Focus

Those wishing to include urban history and architecture in their visit to the greater Freising destination will find different themes there than in Langenbach. The historic old town features burgher and cathedral chapter houses ranging from Gothic to Baroque around Marienplatz; the square is also home to a Marian column dating from 1674. On the Domberg, Freising Cathedral has a crypt and the Beast Column. The Freising City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects related to the city’s history. These examples represent three different ways to explore the city: its historic townscape, notable buildings and a collection about Freising’s history.
