Ponds, paths and local history

The fishponds at the edge of the Tannet forest invite you to walk and relax in summer and winter alike. They offer a different way to spend the day than a trip along the cycling and hiking path: here, the focus is on pausing by the water, while the path offers the chance to get moving. If you would like to include both in your holiday plans, you can arrange your day accordingly.

The Bockerl cycling path runs between Au in the Hallertau and Enzelhausen; around two kilometres of it lie within the Au market area. In Au, the cycling and hiking path can be reached via four access points: Bahnleite, Maria-Eich-Straße, Keltenweg and Fischweiher. It is well signposted. Check local path conditions before setting out. The approximate length refers to the section within the market area, not to the entire path between the two towns.

Those interested in local history can see the traditional market tour as a distinct way to experience Au. It leads through the clearly defined town centre, along old streets and past the castle and the Abens River. Topics include the history of hop growing, the visit of “Ludwig the Bavarian”, and current and modern-era topics. The options therefore differ not only in pace, but also in perspective: walking and paths offer a contrast to a guided tour of the town.

The German Hop Route offers another way to explore the region. It runs northwards past Au in the Hallertau via Zolling and Attenkirchen. For your plans, this offers a different geographical perspective from the market tour, whose stops are in the town centre and by the Abens River.

A distinct set of themes within the wider Freising destination

Within the wider Freising destination, the Amper Valley is designated a landscape conservation area and is used for hiking and cycling. It is also home to numerous animal and plant species in particular need of protection. These include four of the 16 dragonfly species threatened with extinction in Bavaria. Nature lovers will find a distinct area of interest here within the wider Freising destination.

Freising’s history can also be read in its landmarks. The historic old town includes burghers’ and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque period around Marienplatz, where a Marian column dating from 1674 also stands. On Domberg, Freising Cathedral has a crypt and the Beast Column. The town museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history. These sites offer different points of focus: architecture in the urban landscape, sacred architecture and a collection devoted to local history.

For contemporary art, Schafhof is a distinct destination within the wider Freising area. The centre in Upper Bavaria exhibits works by international and local artists throughout the year. The Johannismarkt and an Advent market are also held there annually, where selected craftspeople present high-quality one-of-a-kind pieces.

The Weihenstephan Gardens are located on the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery and are maintained by Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. In the courtyard garden, a viewing terrace offers a view of the Alpine panorama. The five-hectare trial garden tests perennials, woody plants and new rose varieties for their practical value. The Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan has a small brewery museum and the adjoining Braustüberl Weihenstephan restaurant; brewery tours are also available. The wider Freising destination thus offers gardens, art, local history and brewing culture to suit a range of interests.
