Freising: history, art and landscape

Freising offers a distinct focus on urban history and culture. Around Marienplatz, the historic old town features burghers’ and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque periods; a Marian column from 1674 stands in the square. On Domberg, Freising Cathedral has a crypt and the Beast Column. The City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history.

If you prefer contemporary art, Freising is home to Schafhof, a centre for contemporary art in Upper Bavaria with year-round exhibitions by international and local artists. The Weihenstephan Art Trail passes almost 30 works of art across the campus. It consists of two circular routes, each taking a little over an hour.
