Isareck Castle and Wang’s Architectural History

Isareck Castle was built between 1559 and 1570 by Asmus Hälmayr for Duke Albrecht V as a four-wing complex. The castle complex also includes St. George’s Chapel and a 19th-century English-style park. The castle is located near Wang on a hill where the Amper and Isar meet, and is privately owned. It lies between Volkmannsdorf and Wang on the steep slopes of the Isar, near the confluence of the two rivers. On the return journey to Wang, the hiking trail passes the castle. Another historic destination in the village is the Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist. This late Gothic hall church has a polygonal chancel set back from the nave and a flank tower. The chancel roof structure dates from 1430 to 1433, while that of the nave dates from 1457/58; the cemetery wall is also medieval. The circular hiking trail from Wang follows former salt roads, vineyards, the 1313 Battle of Gammelsdorf battlefield, and prehistoric settlements along the Isar and Amper to Volkmannsdorf near Moosburg an der Isar. The Isar and Amper meet there. On the way back to Wang, the trail passes Isareck Castle. The loop therefore brings together landscape and history, rather than leading to just one destination. For a cycling tour, there is a different connection: north of Moosburg an der Isar, a roughly six-kilometre variant of the Ammer-Amper Cycle Route runs via Wang to the Isar Cycle Route. For walkers, by contrast, the focus is on the circular route, with its historic stops and return past the castle.
